Start your morning visiting surrounding little villages by bike. Spend the afternoon roaming the old city neighborhood of crumbling tea warehouses, 17th-century streets, and attractive pagodas. End the evening with cao lau noodles in Central Market, or walk near the riverfront until you find a pub for a cold drink. What's Special about Hoi An?

In the 17th century, Hoi An was one of the most important trading centers in Southeast Asia, linking routes between Japan, China, India, and the Middle East. The city’s virtual abandonment a century later preserved much of its distinctive feel and architecture to present day, now ready to be explored on your bespoke Hoi An vacation.

Though a noteworthy tourist center, Hoi An preserves much of its country charm. Residents, especially in the surrounding villages, tend to be relaxed, curious, and amenable.

Hoi An is a year-round destination. For balmy weather but the best snorkeling conditions, visit between May and August. The rest of the year brings cooler temperatures and fewer tourists.

Take a break and sip an icy drink in a stylish lounge, sample drool-worthy local treats like sizzling banh xeo crepes, or head into a spa for some pampering.

With Japanese folklore, Chinese temples, and French-infused cuisine, Hoi An was truly a dynamic, multicultural trading hub. The Museum of Folk Culture and the Museum of Sa Huynh Culture give a worthy introduction.

Vietnamese is the most commonly spoken language among locals. Some residents speak French, while English and Chinese are usually spoken in tourist amenities and attractions.

Political turmoil and advancing river silt deposits combined to take Hoi An off most trading maps in the late 18th century, preserving much of its architecture. An evening stroll in the old city is a must.
