For a unique experience in Yangon, why not take a ride aboard one of the city’s vintage Chevrolet buses? Introduced to the city during World War II, these colorful old characters were until recently used as public buses, but have since been ‘retired’ and replaced by newer buses.
The good news is, you can still take a ride on one of them, and you can do it in style. A handful of these 1944 Chevrolets – nicknamed the “Elephant Coach” – were restored into luxury transfer vehicles, complete with teak interiors, locally made handicrafts, and big comfy seats. Hopping on board one of these luxurious “big belly” buses is like stepping back into history.
Take a ride on one if you find yourself in Yangon – get picked up at the airport and transfer in style to your hotel, or take a tour through the city’s colonial centre. These lovely rambling vehicles are being systematically phased out of use, so you should plan your trip to Myanmar soon if you don’t want to miss out on this classic old-world experience.
If you’re taking a Backyard Travel tour in Bagan, opt for the highly recommend Balloon Over Bagan side-trip were you not only get to see the city from a hot air balloon, you can enjoy a transfer in one of these beautiful vintage buses.
