Daily Itinerary

Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City – Cai Be

With lush rice fields, bountiful fruit orchards, flowing waterways and welcoming locals, the Mekong Delta is an unforgettable destination. Start your 3 night Mekong Delta cruise with a 2-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta. Once you arrive at Cai Be you’ll jump on a boat and travel up a small river to start your 7-kilometer bicycle tour. Peddle along quiet country roads, over canals, past fruit orchids and through quaint villages. If you are not a keen cycler, you can opt to ride on a xe loi (trailer towed by a bicycle), which is only used in the Mekong Delta region. Stop at some local workshops and see people craft turmeric spring-roll paper and water palm roof thatching. At mid-morning, visit a local family-run orchard of tropical fruit trees. You’ll even get a chance to sample some of the fresh fruit while listening to the owner’s life stories as a former war veteran. Next, sit back and relax as you paddle through lush canals in a traditional sampan boat.

You’ll continue your day by cycling to a 100-year-old house, which has fused traditional Vietnamese and European architectural designs. Here you’ll enjoy a lunch of local dishes unique to the Mekong Delta region. Continue by road to Cai Be where you will stay overnight in a picturesque riverfront resort.

Spend the evening at your leisure.

  • Day 2: Cai Be – Chau Doc

Depart early on the 1.5-hour drive leading deeper into the Mekong Delta to Sa Dec.

Escaping much of the modernization that has influenced the rest of Vietnam, Sa Dec is a charming and authentic Mekong Delta town. The French writer Marguerite Duras spent 4 years here in the late 1920s. In 1984, her famous novel The Lover won the Prix Goncourt prize for literature. You’ll have lunch at the old home of the main character in Duras’ novel after your stop at the beautiful Kien An Cung Pagoda. Continue on to Chau Doc.

Situated on the Hau River, a branch of the Mekong River, is the laid-back and friendly city of Chau Doc. Vietnamese, Cham, Khmer, Buddhists and Muslims co-exist side by side in this city due to its close proximity to Cambodia.

You’ll take a boat in the afternoon to visit a tiny mosque, which serves the Cham community in the Chau Giang District. Originally Hindu, the Cham minority became Muslin as a result of contact with Arab seafarers and merchants in the middle ages. From the 2nd to the 9th centuries, the Cham dominated coastal Vietnam. You’ll have the chance to discover the distinctive architecture of this area. Stop to watch the Cham practice silk weaving and visit a stunning Khmer temple. Then, explore the floating houses, which also function as catfish farms, a huge industry for the country.

The rest of the afternoon and evening is free to enjoy at your leisure.

Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta, its name coming from cam thi giang, meaning “river of poems”.

Spend the afternoon cycling around Can Tho and the surrounding countryside. You’ll meet friendly locals and see cottage industries, visit small farms harvesting or planting rice and explore secluded temples.

Spend the rest of the afternoon and evening at your leisure.
