  • Day 2: Pak Ou Caves – Luang Prabang

After breakfast, your tailored Luang Prabang tour starts with a morning visit to the most photographed temple in Luang Prabang, Wat Xieng Thong, which was built by King Setthathirat in 1560. Then you’ll be transferred to the pier to embark on a 2-hour river cruise along the Mekong.

You’ll float up the river to the famous Pak Ou Caves, called Tam Ting by locals. This sacred pilgrimage site nestled in a limestone cliff is filled with thousands of gold-gilded Buddha statues. Ranging in size from a few centimeters to human height, the statues fill the caves with a golden sheen and serene atmosphere.

You’ll also discover life along these rivers and observe the daily lives of fishermen who cast their nets in elegant motions. If time permits, you’ll also stop at Ban Xang Hay, a village that specializes in making rice wine.

Back in Luang Prabang, you’ll enjoy a sumptuous lunch of local Lao dishes at Tamarind, one of the best restaurants in town. (Please note: The restaurant is closed on Sundays.)

In the afternoon, visit the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum, and continue to Wat Mai, a temple renowned for its golden bas-relief. During Pi Mai, or Lao New Year, the Prabang Buddha statue normally housed in the National Museum is displayed in this temple for the public to view. Next up is Wat Sensoukarahm, famous for its dazzling golden façade.

At the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Center, a museum dedicated to the rich diversity of Laos’ hill tribe groups, you’ll view traditional tools, costumes, and artifacts that provide great insight into the Lao people. (Please note: The center is closed on Monday.)

  • Day 3: Luang Prabang – Kuang Si – Luang Praba

Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel around 5:30 a.m. for a special dawn visit to witness local monks collecting alms. As the sun begins to rise, long lines of orange-robed monks emerge from their temples and walk barefoot down the streets of central Luang Prabang collecting offerings from locals. This beautiful daily ritual offers a glimpse into the spirituality of the Lao people. Your guide can answer your questions relating to Buddhism and lead you to streets with fewer tourists.

Next, we’ll drive 45 minutes through the countryside to the Kuang Si Waterfalls where you’ll be among the first visitors of the day. After a gentle 10-minute walk, you will find a private picnic breakfast set up in our favorite spot overlooking the turquoise pools. Every part of your breakfast is sourced locally, from the hand-woven tablecloth and baskets to the fresh-squeezed juice and the delicious coffee grown in the Boloven Plateau—some even call it the “Champagne of Coffee”! On the menu are fresh fruit, yoghurt, muesli, smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels, and a selection of fresh breads, pastries and organic jam.

After breakfast, walk around the multiple tiers of the waterfall or take a dip in its natural pools. (Please note: The water is cold from November to March. If you choose to swim, please dress modestly and avoid bikinis that show a lot of skin.)

You can also opt to visit the nearby bear sanctuary run by Free The Bears Fund. Currently, 23 Asiatic Black Bears live in the sanctuary. They were saved from poaching—a major threat to these animals due to the use of their bile in Chinese medicine. By around 10 a.m. the bears become more active, anticipating lunch. This is the best time to see them, rather than lunchtime when most tourists visit.

On the way back to Luang Prabang, we’ll stop at Kuang Si Butterfly Park, a beautiful garden filled with hundreds of Laos’ native butterflies! (Please note: The park is closed on Tuesday.)

In the afternoon, you will visit Wat Visoun, the holiest temple of the city. It was rebuilt after the invading Black Flags from Southern China destroyed the temple in 1887. Continue on to Wat Aham, then to Wat That, where the ashes of King Sisavang Vong are interred within the central stupa.

Finally, for a stunning panoramic view of the city at sunset, climb the 328 steps to the top of Mount Phousi. Then, if you fancy, hunt for souvenirs at the nearby hill tribe night market, where you will find handicrafts, textiles and local wares.

    Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Meals included on this day: Breakfast.

  • Day 4: Luang Prabang Departure

After breakfast the day is free to spend at your leisure until your guide meets you for your transfer by private car to the airport.
