If it’s true that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, Isaan must be the most beloved region in Asia. Said to be the soul of the nation, Isaan is an area of this wonderful country that many feel epitomizes what ’authentic’ Thailand is – a nation of fun-loving, smiling people who love life and enjoy great food.

Your insightful investigation of Isaan’s culinary scene begins in Korat, the biggest city in the Northeast of Thailand and the gateway to the region. You’ll visit some of the key sites in the city including Prasat Hin Phimai, a temple that’s comparable to the majestic Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

You’ll sample the delightful local delicacy somtam, an explosive spicy salad that pairs perfectly with grilled chicken. You’ll also go to Khao Yai National Park and take a tour of one of Asia’s foremost wineries and enjoy a tasting with a specialist.

From Khao Yai you’ll venture to Khon Kaen, a region famous for fabulous silk and tasty Isaan sausages. You’ll also discover some of the area’s bustling local markets packed with vibrant stalls that sell a huge variety of colorful foods and exotic ingredients.

Your trip will climax in Wang Nam Mok, a village homestay project that offers an authentic view of a traditional Thai village, where you will be blessed at your own private Baci Ceremony and fed a feast of regional specialties by a local family. You’ll also learn the secrets of preparing some of the delightful dishes under the guidance of an expert chef from the region.

Daily Itinerary

Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Bangkok - Korat - Khao Yai

Welcome to a gastronomic adventure of Thailand - renowned throughout the world for its fabulous cuisine and warm, welcoming locals! This morning you will be met by your Backyard Travel guide who will collect you from your hotel and take you on a 3-hour journey to Korat, the gateway to the Northeastern Plateau and the region of Isaan.

Korat is the biggest city in Isaan and has a culture all of its own. Now a largely agricultural region, Korat (formal name ‘Nakhon Ratchasima’) was originally built in the 17th century as a stronghold defense to protect the (then) Siamese Kingdom from any threat arriving from the north.

Although the city that stands today bears little resemblance to that fortress, some of the original gates and walls have been preserved around the moat in a similar way to Chiang Mai

Upon your arrival you’ll first visit Prasat Hin Phimai, the largest and one of the most important sandstone Khmer temple complexes in Thailand. Comparable to Angkor Wat, the temple dates back to the Angkorian period when the Khmer empire stretched across a large portion of Southeast Asia.

The sanctuary has been lovingly restored and the ruins have been preserved as a National Historical Park. Once you’ve investigated the sandstone ruins you’ll take lunch at Vimaya Purapat Restaurant in Phimai where you can try the signature pad Thai dish ‘Pad Mee Korat’ - papaya salad with BBQ chicken.

After lunch your guide will take you to Khao Yai Province, home to Khao Yai National Park - the third largest park in Thailand.

The vast park benefits from a high-altitude climate and experiences ideal weather for grapevine production. The wine in Khao Yai has recently gained the global reputation of being a leader in Southeast Asia’s foray into new world wine production.

The vineyard will be your first stop in Khao Yai. You’ll take a tour of the winery’s grounds to admire the spectacular views before ending with a wine tasting led by one of the vineyard’s resident specialists.

In the evening your local Backyard Travel guide will take you to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, to try some more regional specialties then ensure you return to your hotel to get some much-earned rest.

    Overnight in Khao Yai

    Meals included: Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 2: Khao Yai - Chaiyaphum - Khon Kae

After breakfast at your hotel you’ll depart on a 90 minute journey to the Ban Khwao district in Chaiyaphum Province. This region is famous for its top quality silk and cotton production and especially for the rare Mudmee Silk made using secrets handed down from generation to generation.

Next you’ll stop at a local house to learn how to make flavorful and unique Isaan sausages, another famous product from the region.

You’ll then continue to Phy Wiang to visit the local Dinosaur Museum. Phy Wiang is where the first dinosaur fossil was found in Thailand and the museum contains a permanent exhibition about fossils and conservation.

Your expert Backyard Travel guide will take you for lunch at a local restaurant next, before you continue your journey on to Khon Kaen in the afternoon.

Khon Kaen is a regional center for commercial, administration and education in upper Isaan which is often used by travelers as a gateway to visiting parts of Northeast Thailand and neighbor Laos.

After you arrive your Backyard Travel guide will take you on a walking tour through the local market to see the fabulous variety of Isaan food. Among the vibrant colors, potent smells and interesting characters you’ll find many fresh vegetables, fruits, ingredients and spices.

In the evening, your expert Backyard Travel guide will take you to enjoy a traditional local dinner at Krua Supanniga by Khun Yai, a restaurant that serves up authentic dishes that stick to ‘grandma’s’ Eastern Thai recipes.

As you explore the bustling network of stalls and stands you’ll have the chance to sample a bountiful variety of local delights such as grilled sticky rice cake and grilled pork.

Next your expert Backyard Travel guide will take you to explore Khon Kaen town, but first you’ll make a stop at Phra That Kham Kaen at Wat Chetiyaphum, a stupa that’s believed to contain relics of Buddha.

After you’ll visit Nong Wang temple and climb the nine flights of stairs of the temple’s pagoda to enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the city and the nearby Kaen Nakorn Lake.

On your way to Udon Thani you’ll make a stop at Khao Suan Kwang for lunch where you can enjoy a delicious serving of Isaan’s famous roast chicken and spicy papaya salad. Remember; if you can’t handle the fire of Thai spice be sure to ask for "mai phet!" (not spicy).

Once sated, you’ll continue your journey to Baan Chiang Village, an archeological site in Udon Thani Province which was discovered in 1957 by Stephen Young, a Harvard sociology graduate. In 1974-75, the University of Pennsylvania undertook a major excavation of the site in conjunction with the government’s fine art department.

The village of Ban Chiang is perhaps best known for beautiful pottery, but the excavation uncovered many more artifacts from the site including metal, stone, charcoal and human bones. In 1992, UNESCO registered the site as a World Heritage Site of History, a clear indication of the region’s significance.

After soaking up the local history, your Backyard Travel guide will take you on to Wang Nam Mok where you’ll experience an old-style village that’s retained its authenticity. Many of the houses in the village participate in the homestay program which is a popular attraction for both travelers and Thai people who want to experience the traditional Thai lifestyle.

The village is engulfed by lush, tropical jungle, rice paddies and pineapple plantations which produce some of the best-tasting pineapples in the world. You’ll have the chance to walk around the village with your Backyard Travel guide who’ll help you chat with locals and discover what local everyday life is like.

You’ll also have the unique opportunity to be blessed at a traditional Baci Ceremony. The ritual will bless you with good health and luck for your onward journey.
