A TASTE OF ISAAN

Taste papaya salad, roast chicken and all the famed flavors of Isaan. Be immersed in Northeastern Thai culture on this culinary tour

4 Days, 3 Nights     FROM THB28,370 PER PERSON

Thailand is a country famed for its cooking, and Isaan food—the cuisine of the northeast—ranks right up there with some of the best in the nation. On this local, immersive culinary tour, we’ll explore not only the flavors of Isaan, but also quaint villages and the most important cultural sites. You’ll enjoy meeting locals on the way, being welcomed into their homes and having families cook you their special dishes.

Starting in Bangkok, a scenic mountain drive will bring you to Korat, the gateway to Isaan. Before you take your first taste of local Isaan food, a stop at the largest Angkorian temple in Thailand will introduce you to the ancient history of this region. Then, it’s on to Isaan’s wine country, where you’ll indulge in a wine tasting with a local expert right in a vineyard.

You’ll also be on the trail of dinosaur bones, artisan silk, and sprawling local markets crammed with spices, produce, flowers and trinkets all specific to the region. Along the way, we’ll continue to sample the local delicacies that Isaan is famous for, such as roast chicken, fermented pork, papaya salad and Isaan sausage. You’ll also have the chance to spend one unforgettable night at an eco- and community-minded village homestay, where you’ll immerse yourself in quiet local life and perhaps even help your hosts cook. When you leave Isaan, indelible memories of this wonderful country’s people, flavors and colors will be yours to keep forever.

“Many travelers don’t know the culture, history and food of Isaan, which is some of the most interesting regions in Thailand. But you’ll get to know it all on this tour.”

A TASTE OF ISAAN

  • Daily Itinerary
  • Day 1: Bangkok - Korat - Khao Yai

Get ready to get your taste buds titillated on this delectable Isaan culinary tour.

From Bangkok, we’ll go on a 4-hour, scenic mountain drive to Korat, located on the edge of Thailand’s northeastern plateau. Korat is the largest province in Isaan (northeast Thailand), and its people are fiercely proud of their own unique culture and cuisine.

We’ll first stop at the sandstone Khmer temple complex, Prasat Hin Phimai, the largest of its kind in Thailand. Dating back to the time when the Khmer Empire extended across Thailand, this sanctuary has been restored and preserved as a National Historical Park.

In Korat Town, you’ll have your first taste of authentic Isaan food—a lunch of grilled chicken, papaya salad, and the famed local version of pad Thai, known as pad mee Korat.

After lunch, we’ll continue on to Khao Yai. The area around Khao Yai National Park is home to ideal grape-growing climates, and the local wine of Khao Yai is gaining a reputation internationally.

Enjoy a wine tasting at one of the area’s vineyards with a local expert. Drink in the view of the Khao Yai mountains from this lovely hillside setting.

For dinner, you’ll tuck in at Lookkai Restaurant, a popular fine-dining restaurant in Khao Yai.

  • Day 2: Khao Yai - Chaiyaphum - Khon Kaen

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, you’ll set off for Ban Khwao in the province of Chaiyaphum. The region is famous for its silk and cotton weaving. The artisan craft of mud mee silk, which has been passed down through generations, is unique to Ban Khwao.

In Ban Khwao, we’ll visit a local home to see how traditional, spicy Isaan sausages are made. You can observe the entire production process, and our host will explain why these sausages have become popular all over Thailand.

Then it’s roughly a 2.5-hour drive to Phu Wiang to visit the Dinosaur Museum. The first dinosaur fossil in Thailand was found in Phu Wiang, and the museum houses a large collection of fossils and informative exhibits. We’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to Khon Kaen in the afternoon.

Khon Kaen is the commercial, administrative and educational center of the Upper Isaan region. This rustic town is often used as a jumping-off point to visit other parts of northeast Thailand and Indochina.

We’ll stroll through a local market to see a vast array of Isaan food, spices, produce and herbs. Along the way, we’ll have chances to observe the local way of life.

Tonight, we’ll enjoy a Vietnamese–Isaan dinner at a local Khon Kaen restaurant.

Today, your Isaan culinary tour starts with an early visit to the morning market to sample some local delicacies, such as grilled pork and grilled sticky rice cakes.

Next we’ll take a stroll through town and visit Phra That Kham Kaen at Wat Chetiyaphum. This is where the city of Khon Kaen is believed to have been founded in ancient times. From here, we’ll visit Nong Wang temple and ascend nine flights of stairs to enjoy panoramic views of Kaen Nakorn Lake and the city below.

Next we’ll drive an hour to Khao Suan Kwang, where we’ll stop for a delicious lunch of roast chicken and papaya salad, for which Isaan is famous.

We’ll continue on to UNESCO-listed Baan Chiang Village in Udon Thani Province, which has evidence of pre-historical settlements dating back from 1,800 to 5,600 years ago. Baan Chiang’s biggest claim to fame is the beautiful pottery made by ancient villagers, but it has also produced many other artifacts, including human skeletons, animal bones, metals and charcoal.

We’ll head next to the award-winning eco-tourism village of Wang Nam Mok Homestay. Creating local employment and preserves its natural environment Wang Nam Mok Homestay offers an immersive experience in Northern Thai life. Upon arrival, we’ll be welcomed by villagers, and you will be free to explore the village surrounded by rice paddies. Say hello to the local children and give your hosts a hand at preparing dinner.

Tonight before dinner, the villagers will perform the traditional Baci ceremony, which blesses visitors with health, good luck and a safe journey. Then we’ll all sit down to a local dinner together.

Afterwards, we’ll take a cultural tour of the local temples and sites, including the famous image of Buddha in Phra Chao Lan Thong village. Then, we’ll have lunch at Wang Nam Mok before saying “good bye” to our hosts.

From here, it’s roughly an hour ride to the Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge to cross the border to Vientiane, or a 1.5-hour transfer to Udon Thani Airport for your onward journey.
