  • Start
  • Day 1: Kyoto - Kinosaki

You’ll catch the train from Kyoto to the seaside town of Kinosaki Onsen this morning (a journey that takes approximately 2.5hrs) where you will be met by a Backyard Travel representative who will transfer you to your ryokan (hotel). You’ll then have the chance to discover the quaint Japanese town at your own leisure.

Take a stroll around the 8th century seaside town and enjoy a taste of old Japan. Located in the Hyogo Prefecture, the small town (population less than 5,000) is a quintessential low-rise Japanese village that’s escaped development and retains its old-world image.Onsen is the Japanese word for ‘hot spring’ and the fact the town is named Kinosaki Onsen gives away the main attraction of the sleepy region. Indeed, Kinosaki Onsen is one of the most popular onsen destinations in the Kansai Region.

Once you feel you’ve got your bearings of the local streets, you can collect your ‘Stotoyu Meguri Tour’ passes and slip into your yukata (Japanese robes) and geta (wooden clogs) to fully embrace the era the town represents as you visit the local spas.

Your pass includes access to seven local onsen which comprise the ‘Stotoyu Meguri Tour’. Each onsen opens around 7am and closes at 10.30pm which gives you plenty of time to visit over today and tomorrow morning (your pass is valid for both days).

In the evening you’ll enjoy a multi-course kaiseki dinner at your ryokan guest house. Ryokan are a style of hotel that originates from the Edo period and has been utilized by travelers for the last 400 years.Ryokan feature tatami-matted rooms, sliding doors and communal onsen baths and are commonly found in the country’s most picturesque regions. Time may have moved on but ryokan guesthouses remain authentic and many still serve the traditional kaiseki dinner you’ll enjoy tonight.Kaiseki are artistic multi-course meals specifically designed to be a perfect balance of taste, texture, appearance and color and will perfectly round-off your authentic day in a healthy way.

    Day 10
  • Day 2: Kinosaki - Kyoto

If you feel suitably energized from your peaceful night in your traditional ryokan, you may want to rise early to take an early morning asayu - the term for ‘bathing before breakfast’ in Japanese.

Early rise or not, you can enjoy breakfast at your ryokan then, should you wish, take a self-guided trip to Onsenji a Buddhist temple located on the side of Mt. Kuruhi to the west of the town center.

The temple, (which is approximately a 30-40 minute walk uphill) was founded in 738 and dedicated to a Buddhist saint who, as legend has it, prayed for 1,000 days for springs to come to Kinosaki.

In olden times it was customary for all travelers to pay their respects at the temple before they would be permitted to enter any of the town’s onsen baths.

A feature of interest for visitors to the temple is the two-meter-tall, eleven headed Kannon Buddha statue. Unfortunately, the statue is only displayed to the public for 3-year periods every 33 years...

But if you’re traveling between 23 April 2018 and 24 April 2021 you’re in luck so make sure you don’t miss it!If you’d like to visit the summit of Mt. Kuruhi you can also take the easy way up by riding the Kinosaki Ropeway - a cable car that takes you to enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding region and Sea of Japan from an observation deck.

You’ll make the return train journey to Kyoto in the late afternoon. If you’d like to combine this short Japan tour with any of our other Backyard Travel trips, be sure to consult with your expert Travel Specialist who will be happy to customize any of our tours to perfectly suit your needs.
