SOOTHING HOT SPRINGS OF KINOSAKI ONSEN

Relax and refresh at the quintessentially Japanese hot spring town of Kinosaki Onsen on a 2-day spa tour.

TOUR INTRODUCTION

2 Days, 1 Night     FROM JPY 67,599 PER PERS

Enjoy a taste of old Japan on a soothing overnight tour. Take an old-fashioned spa retreat in Kinosaki Onsen, one of the finest examples of traditional onsen towns in Japan. Onsen is the Japanese word for “hot spring,” and Kinosaki has 7 of the most beautiful hot springs in Japan. Touring them is an old tradition in Japan known as Sotoyu Meguri.

On this overnight tour, take a break from the city and discover the ancient pastime of soaking in an onsen. Weary travelers have been relaxing and enjoying these traditional-style Japanese hot spring spas for centuries.

On your brief visit to the small, seaside town of Kinosaki Onsen, you’ll have the opportunity to visit up to 7 iconic local onsen baths. To complete the experience, you can also wear traditional Japanese robes (yukata) and wooden clogs (geta) to fully embrace the charm of the town. You’ll stay in a lovely ryokan, or traditional Japanese-style guesthouse. Here, you’ll have the quintessentially Japanese experience of staying in a room with tatami-mat floors, enjoying a multi-course Japanese dinner of regional produce, and taking a dip in the onsen before sleeping in your futon.

“It really doesn’t get more quintessentially Japanese than this. Kinosaki is one of my favorite places to relax. It might become one of yours too.”

Daily Itinerary

Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Kyoto – Kinosaki Onsen

Welcome to your soothing Kinosaki tour! Both days of this tour will be self-guided.

This morning, you’ll catch the train from JR Kyoto Station to the coastal town of Kinosaki (an approximately 2.5-hour journey), enjoying the scenery on the way. Upon arrival at JR Kinosaki Station, you can either take a free shuttle bus to your ryokan (traditional Japanese-style inn) directly, or you can check your luggage at the station’s forwarding service to explore this onsen town before transferring to your accommodation. (Luggage forwarding is pay-on-the-spot, and your luggage will be delivered to your ryokan.)

    Suggested Self-Guided Itinerary
Go on a brief walking tour of Kinosaki, an 8th-century seaside town in Hyogo Prefecture. This small town (with a population of less than 5,000) is a quintessential Japanese village that’s escaped development and retains its old-world charm.

Check in to your hotel after your walk and pick up your onsen pass. Slip into your yukata (cotton kimono), put on your geta (wooden shoes), and take a stroll through town following the river lined with willows. The town is home to 7 onsen, and your pass gives you access to them all. Touring the 7 onsen of Kinosaki is a tradition called “Sotoyu Meguri.” You’re sure to meet fellow travelers also dressed in geta and yukata on the streets.

Each onsen opens around 7am and closes at 10:30pm. Your pass is valid for both days, so if your preferred onsen is closed, you’ll have a chance to visit it the next day.

In the evening, enjoy a multi-course dinner of seasonal and regional produce at your ryokan. Your room will feature tatami-mat floors, sliding paper doors, and roll-out futon. Before you turn in for the evening, feel free to take one last soak in the shared hot springs at the ryokan.

  • Day 2: Kinosaki - Kyoto

The second day of your Kinosaki tour will also be self-guided.

    Suggested Self-Guided Itinerary
If you feel suitably energized from your peaceful night at your ryokan, you may want to rise early to take an asayu, or “morning bath” in Japanese.

Enjoy breakfast at your ryokan and check out. You can leave your luggage with reception as you visit Onsenji, a Buddhist temple located on the side of Mt. Kuruhi to the west of the town center.

The temple is located approximately a 30–40 minute walk uphill, or you can take a ropeway to Onsenji Station (pay-on-the-spot). The temple was founded in 738 and dedicated to a Buddhist saint who, as legend has it, prayed for 1,000 days for springs to come to Kinosaki. In the past it was customary for all travelers to pay their respects at the temple before they entered any of the town’s onsen baths.

Near the main hall of the temple is the Kinosaki Art Museum, which displays a small but fascinating collection of work.

If you’d like to visit the summit of Mt. Kuruhi you can also take the Kinosaki Ropeway to the observation deck, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding region and the Sea of Japan.

Pick up your luggage at your ryokan and make the return train journey to Kyoto in the late afternoon. If you’d like to combine this short Japan tour with any of our other Backyard Travel trips, just contact our expert Travel Specialist.
