  • Day 2: Tokyo

Take a full day to look at some of Tokyo’s many highlights with the aid of your guide and the convenient, efficient transport system. Your first stop is Meiji Jingu, Tokyo’s most famous shrine, dedicated to the spirit of the late Emperor Meiji. It’s a popular site for Japanese Weddings and if you’re lucky you may see a happy couple here dressed in traditional Shinto wedding garments. Close by is Harajuku, the young fashion centre of Tokyo. Wander round seeing the range of interesting, inventive fashions in the shops and on the people.

Next, walk down Tokyo’s ‘Champs Elysees’, Omotesando. This broad, tree lined avenue is filled with flagship designer shops and boutiques. It’s a short trip by underground train to Ginza; the city’s famous up market shopping, dining and entertainment district. One square meter of land here is worth over 10 million yen (€ 90,000). Stroll through the Imperial Palace East Gardens next; the palace building is the Emperor’s main home.

Our final stop will be in the old town area of Asakusa. Asakusa is Tokyo’s oldest Geisha district, and home to Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, Sensoji. The streets here are a great place to wander, full of old-Japan character with many interesting stalls and shops.

Note: The order of this itinerary may change depending on the location of your hotel.

Your guide will help you to select ingredients for today’s cooking session, after which you’ll head from the market to a Japanese home. Here you’ll learn how to make three different types of sushi: ‘maki sushi’- the familiar ‘rolled’ sushi, ‘gunkan maki’- sushi rice wrapped with seaweed and topped with soft ingredients, and ‘nigiri sushi’- sushi rice with a topping of raw or cooked fish.

You may keep all the utensils from today’s lesson, which means you can make real sushi at anytime when you return home.
