    Day 1
  • Day 2: Tokyo

Today your short Tokyo tour will take you on a full-day, privately guided exploration of Tokyo’s many highlights. To get around town, you’ll be using Tokyo’s convenient, hyper-efficient train system.

Start the day with a visit to Hamarikyu Gardens, a delightful oasis surrounded by a sea of skyscrapers. This former private garden of an Edo Period lord features a lake with a teahouse set on a tiny island. Here you’ll witness a short tea ceremony and try a taste of matcha, Japanese green powder tea.

Following this quintessentially Japanese experience, you’ll take a boat cruise down the Sumida River to see Tokyo from a different perspective.

Asakusa, the city’s oldest Geisha quarters, will be your next stop. This atmospheric neighborhood is a part of Tokyo’s shitamachi (or “old town”), and is also home to Senso-ji, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. The narrow streets and alleys around Senso-ji are full of little shops that sell traditional Japanese handicrafts and souvenirs.

In the afternoon, take a walk down “Tokyo’s Champs-Elysees,” Omotesando. This broad, tree-lined avenue is filled with flagship designer shops and boutiques. Then, to wrap up your city tour, go on an exploration of Meiji Jingu, Tokyo’s most famous shrine. Dedicated to the spirit of the late Emperor Meiji, the shrine is a popular site for Japanese weddings and, if you’re lucky, you may see a happy couple here dressed in traditional Shinto garments to celebrate their wedding.

Please note: The order of activities in this itinerary may change depending on the location of your hotel.

    Day 2
  • Day 3: Tokyo

Today your short Tokyo tour will reveal a lively side of the Japanese culinary world. After breakfast, you’ll meet your expert guide at your hotel at 8:30 a.m. for a visit to Tsukiji Fish Market, the largest fish market in the world. Spend the morning exploring this fascinating, frenetic hive of activity. As you wander through the seafood section, you’ll see more than 480 kinds of seafood, and you might even see an entire tuna being filleted.

Your guide will then lead you to your sushi class (shared and private lessons are available), where you’ll learn how to make three different types of sushi: maki sushi (rolled sushi), nigiri sushi (rice topped with raw or cooked fish) and gunkan maki (rice wrapped with a strip of seaweed and topped with ingredients).

For lunch, you’ll feast on your fresh sushi creations, and you can keep all the utensils you used in your lesson as a souvenir. Take them home to show off your sushi skills to your friends and family!

The rest of the day is free to explore Tokyo at your leisure.

  • Day 4: Tokyo, Optional Day Trip to Kamakura

    Suggested Self-Guided Itinerary
Pound the pavements exploring Tokyo’s diverse and mesmerizing districts. Pop culture hounds and techies will definitely want to visit the electronics district of Akihabara, which is Tokyo’s de facto hub for all things anime, manga, or electronics related. Otaku (you know who you are!) may want to pop into a maid café for an “only in Tokyo” experience. Art lovers will thrill to Tokyo’s circuit of world-class museums and art galleries in Roppongi and Ueno districts.

Or, if you prefer to take a break from the hectic pace of the capital, it’s only a 1-hour train journey from Tokyo to the charming coastal town of Kamakura where surfers and history lovers gather. The former capital of Japan during the 12th to 14th centuries, Kamakura is home to many ancient temples as well as the Daibutsu, the second-largest bronze Buddha statue in Japan. When you’ve had your fill of history, hit the beaches for a little relaxation.

Please note: Return train tickets to Kamakura will need to be arranged in advance at an additional fee.
