PHARE CIRCUS EXPERIENCE CAMBODIA

Take an exclusive insider’s glimpse into the life of Cambodia’s Phare Circus troupe and travel to their roots in the town of Battambang to see where the story began

TOUR INTRODUCTION

3 Days, 2 Nights     FROM US$ 502 PER PERSON

This tour allows the chance to get an insider’s glimpse into the life of Cambodia’s Phare Circus. Spend time behind the scenes in Siem Reap and meet with the artists personally before travelling to the quaint town of Battambang, the home of the troupe where the story of the circus began.

Phare, meaning ’Brightness of Art’, was originally established by the Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS Association) which itself is a non-profit NGO founded by eight ex-refugees from Anchanh Village in Battambang.

The PPS has played a major role in using art to help promote Khmer culture over the last 20 years and enabled a large number of young people to develop skills and forge a career as artists.

You’ll have the chance to investigate the origin of the organization and see first-hand the impact the PPS has had on local communities in Battambang and Siem Reap, taking in local experiences along the way and visiting sites of artistic fascination led by an expert Backyard Travel guide.

Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Siem Reap - Battambang

You’ll either be greeted this morning at your hotel in Siem Reap or welcomed upon arrival by your local Backyard Travel guide at Siem Reap International Airport before embarking on a three-hour drive to the charming town of Battambang.

Once in Battambang, your guide will assist you with check in at your hotel. Battambang is home to Phare and is the town where the circus project was first imagined.

The circus was originally established by the Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS Association) which itself is a non-profit NGO founded by eight ex-refugees from Anchanh Village in Battambang. The PPS has played a major role in using art to help promote Khmer culture over the last 20 years and enabled a large number of young people to develop skills.

In the afternoon you’ll discover why Battambang is the home of Cambodia’s art movement. Visit the art galleries such as the Sammaki Gallery and Make Maek, discovering cultural highlights of the region with your guide who will share their insider local knowledge along the way.

Next you’ll have the chance to make a stop at the small but interesting Battambang Museum which holds a collection of Angkorian lintels.

In the evening, a special experience awaits at Phare Ponleu Selpak. A School of Music, Visual & Performing Arts, Phare Ponleu Selpak utilizes various arts to provide education, support and entertainment to the poor communities.

After the show, your local Backyard Travel guide will take you to enjoy dinner at the eclectic Pomme d’Amour (Apple of Love) - a restaurant run by a former clown from France who is an active supporter of the Phare Circus. Please note: shows at the school are currently only scheduled for Monday and Thursday nights.

Along the way you can visit Tonlé Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and a marvel of nature. It swells to almost five-times its normal size during the rainy season and supports a huge number of fish; which in turn support numerous communities. Pass flooded forests and floating houses along the way, witnessing how people adapt to life on this fertile body of water.Note: This boat trip is only possible during the high water period season (July -December) as water levels are too low during the dry season. Alternative transport is by road.Arrive in Siem Reap in time for a tour of discovery of a purely unique Cambodian experience - the dynamic Phare Circus, at a tent which was specially designed to fulfill the acoustic needs of the live music performances. You will arrive before the show starts and the audience has been seated with an exclusive chance to enjoy a behind-the-scenes sneak preview as the colony of artists warm-up.

A member of the circus will accompany you, and will answer questions and share tidbits of information about the performers who are all graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak’s vocational training center in Battambang.

After meeting the troupe and before the show begins, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner at the nearby Phare Café.

At 7:30pm the show begins! The inspirational hour-long show will delight people of all ages. The performance mixes traditional and modern theatre with music, dance, contortion and acrobatics in a projection of modern day life in Cambodia.
