Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Siem Reap

Upon arrival in Siem Reap you’ll be met by your local Backyard Travel guide who will escort you to your next hotel for check in. This charming Cambodian city is the perfect gateway to discovering the ancient temples of Angkor, the countries spiritual home and the most significant site of Khmer architecture in the world.

After settling in to your comfortable new accommodation, you’ll begin your exploration of the Angkorian temples by local moto dop (similar to a ‘tuk tuk’).

Built in the 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II, the temple was constructed to symbolize Mount Meru, a sacred mountain in Buddhism considered to be the center of all physical, metaphysical and spiritual universes. The temple itself is covered with stone carvings and has more than 2,000 Apsara dancers decorating the temple. Angkor Wat is so revered by the nation that Cambodia is the only flag in the world with a building on it - and that building is Angkor Wat.

You’ll then enjoy a bird’s eye view of the stupendous structure from a 120-meter-high tethered helium balloon. This will give you an overview and understanding of the vast layout of the complex as well as the nearby Phnom Bakheng, West Baray and surrounding jungle and rice paddies.

Your visit to the iconic structure will end after sunset, allowing you to see the temple at its most beautiful. As dusk arrives, relax and observe the sun slowly dipping down, its soft rays cascading down the temple creating a magical moment.

In the evening you’ll dine at The Sugar Palm Restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious introduction to the unique flavors of Khmer cuisine as you dine in a beautiful traditional Khmer house.

  • Day 2: Siem Reap

After breakfast today, your local Backyard Travel guide will take you to explore some local villages and to experience an authentic view of Cambodia. You’ll travel out of Siem Reap by private vehicle to a safe starting point for a cycle trip to Rolous.

Your leisurely bike ride will take you through the stunning countryside, complete with paddy fields and sugar palm trees, to the Rolous Pagoda. Once at the pagoda you’ll be treated to a very unique experience as you receive a private blessing by the residing monks. The ceremony will offer you a blessing for good health and safe onward journey - a moment you’ll never forget.

You’ll then be escorted by private vehicle to the port where you’ll venture out on a fascinating boat trip around Tonlé Sap Lake.

Tonlé Sap is Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, and is officially designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, though its size varies greatly depending on the season. The lake increases by approximately 400% during the monsoon season, and is a part of Cambodia that few foreigners visit.

On your tour, you’ll pass floating villages, complete with floating hospitals, schools, pagodas and mosques. Along the way you’ll also pay visit to Kampong Phluck, one such ‘floating’ village where you can see houses on stilts that are submerged when Tonlé Sap Lake swells - giving the impression they float on the water.

Lunch will be taken as a picnic at one of the ‘floating’ houses as you enjoy the local community go about its daily life.

After lunch you’ll be cruised back to the port and then transferred back to Siem Reap in a private vehicle with the rest of the day free to spend at your own leisure. Please Note: Due to low water levels during the dry season, the boat trip is only possible between June and March. If your trip is outside this period, a visit to an alternative floating village at Chong Kneas can be arranged instead.

  • Day 3: Siem Reap

Once you’ve enjoyed breakfast at your hotel, you’ll set off with your Backyard Travel guide to explore Ta Prohm Temple, which you may recognize from the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie, which was set and filmed here.

Ta Prohm is unique in that it has been left largely as it was discovered: overgrown and engulfed by trees and vines, with many parts of the temple in a state of disrepair. This character makes the temple one of the most memorable and unique of the Angkor temples.

You’ll visit Ta Phrom and some of the other temples on a mini-tour by moto dop, including stops at Banteay Kdei, a Buddhist monastery built in the 12th century and Srah Srang, or Royal Bath, a large body of water that was at one time considered the most beautiful area of Siem Reap. Next your guide will take you to Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city. This 12th century masterpiece is majestic to see up close and is famous for its 54 towers with enigmatic faces representing the 54 provinces of the Khmer Empire. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must-see structures and are both known for their intricate stone sculptures.

After a morning of fascination and awe, your local Backyard Travel guide will then escort you back to your hotel where you can enjoy lunch at your leisure.

In late afternoon your guide will take you to enjoy a relaxing cruise in a gondola paddle boat on the moat of Angkor Thom while you take in a spectacular sunset over Prasat Chroung temple loaded with complimentary soft drinks and delicious canapés. We can also arrange for champagne to accompany your magical sunset moment (not included - supplementary costs apply).

In the evening you will have the chance to enjoy unique Cambodian cuisine with dinner at Cuisine Wat Damnak, a restaurant founded on the simple concept of using only local fresh seasonal produce. Head Chef and owner Joannès Rivière is one of the top chefs in Cambodia and is also the author of Cambodian Cooking, one of the first Khmer cuisine cookbooks available. Please note: Cuisine Wat Damnak is closed from mid-August to mid-October and Sunday & Monday each week. Only set 5- or 6-course menus are served and dishes change depending on the season. Please inform your Travel Specialist with any dietary requirements in advance.

  • Day 4: Siem Reap - Phnom Penh

After breakfast your guide will transfer you to Siem Reap airport for the short 45-minute flight to Phnom Penh. You’ll be met at Phnom Penh airport by your next local Backyard Travel guide, who will pick you up and transfer to hotel for check in.

Phnom Penh was once considered one of the most beautiful cities in Asia, and still retains much of its colonial charm. The bustling city is situated at the confluence of the mighty Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers and boasts tree-lined boulevards and an abundance of original architecture.

Your expert Backyard Travel guide will escort you on ‘moto dop’ (the Cambodian ‘tuk tuk’), a traditional and fun way to see some of the city’s main highlights. Your first day of guided exploration will start at Wat Phnom a hilltop temple built in 1373. The 27-meter-high structure is the tallest religious monument in the city and (according to legend) was constructed by Lady Penh who built the temple to protect sacred statues of Buddha. The city was later named after Lady Phnom, and the site is still one of the most sacred sites for Cambodian people.

From Wat Phnom you’ll head to the Royal Palace which was built in 1866 and has been home to Cambodian monarchs ever since (with the exception of the Khmer Rouge reign).

The palace complex also houses the ‘Silver Pagoda’, known to locals as Wat Prakeo. The Silver Pagoda, which contains many effigies of Buddha made from gold, silver, bronze and crystal, was rebuilt in the 1960s at the behest of Queen Kossamak and is made up of over 5,000 silver tiles that blanket the floor.

Next you’ll move to the National Museum of Cambodia which lies conveniently next to the Royal Palace. The museum is the largest in Cambodia and tells the story of the nation’s history and archaeology. The building houses one of the world’s largest collections of Khmer art made during the 4th - 13thcenturies. The roof of the museum is also home to one of Cambodia’s largest bat colonies! In the evening you’ll enjoy a romantic sunset river cruise with a delicious dinner served on board as you relax and enjoy a unique perspective of Phnom Penh’s popular riverfront as it bursts to life in the early evening.

  • Day 5: Phnom Penh - Koh Kong

Your local guide will collect you at a pre-arranged time after breakfast this morning and take you on a 4½ hour journey out of the Cambodian capital towards the magnificent Cardamom Mountains.

Once you arrive at Tatai Bridge you’ll board a private boat to make a quick 20 minute trip to the 4 Rivers Floating Lodge - a peaceful retreat set on a quiet bend in the river with the majestic Cardamom Mountains providing an idyllic backdrop to cherish.

The remote environmentally-friendly jungle resort feeds off the serenity of the verdant area, creating an environment of peace and solitude in the midst of Cambodia’s fertile rainforest.

You’ll have the chance to spend the afternoon at your own leisure, perhaps exploring the river by kayak, swimming in the clear water or even indulge in a spot of fishing from your private terrace.

Wildlife is plentiful in this region, and you may be able to spot numerous colorful butterflies and bizarre-looking insects, not to mention the huge variety of bird species local to this area such as Great Hornbills.

In the evening, before dinner (which will be served at the lodge) you’ll take a short boat trip to see the local fireflies in action. The tiny lightning bugs are commonly found to tropical environments and can be seen illuminating trees nearby rivers making them look just like Christmas trees!

  • Day 6: Koh Kong

Depending on the tide, you’ll have time to enjoy breakfast at the lodge before your expert Backyard Travel guide picks you up at 10am and takes you on a 45-minute boat ride past Tatai Village to the majestic six-meter high Tatai Falls which builds to a thunderous crescendo as you inch closer and closer.

After stopping to appreciate the falls you’ll veer off down a small branch of the river to venture into the heart of the Cardamom jungle, serenaded by a plethora of exotic birds and other mysterious wildlife.

You’ll pause for a delicious picnic lunch deep within the jungle to appreciate the feeling of isolation as you’re surrounded by wonderful nature and tranquility. If you’re feeling active, after lunch you can choose to make the return journey in your own kayak, or you can stay on board the boat for a more relaxing trip.

Once you arrive back at the lodge in the late afternoon you’ll be free to spend the rest of the day at your own leisure before enjoying dinner at the lodge once again.

  • Day 7: Koh Kong - Sihanoukville - Kep

You’ll leave your idyllic riverside resort after breakfast this morning as your local Backyard Travel guide takes you on a six-hour ride along the coast to Kep. Once a famous beach resort in the 1960’s, Kep is currently undergoing something of a revival due to its serene setting, sublime scenery and spectacular seafood.

After arrival, your afternoon will be free to spend at your leisure. You can take the opportunity to explore the local area by bicycle or relax perhaps head straight to the beach and relax and unwind to the soothing sounds of the ocean with a cocktail in hand.
