Embark on an odyssey of spiritual discovery to a little-known side of Myanmar on this Monywa tour. You’ll journey from the bustling streets of Mandalay to the laid-back town of Monywa, then cross the Chindwin River to the beautifully painted cave temples of Po Win Taung and Shwe Ba Taung.
On your way to the riverside town of Monywa, well loved for its neem-tree-lined streets and laid-back vibe, you’ll have the chance to visit Thanboddhay Pagoda and the reclining Buddha of Boditahtaung—clocking in as Myanmar’s largest at 100 meters long.
Then, venture across the Chindwin River and take a ride in an open-air jeep to arrive at the vast temple network of Po Win Taung, which features 947 sandstone caves carved out of the cliff face by hand. Archaeologists believe the collection of Buddhist murals and statues found here are the richest in all of Southeast Asia.
Venture a few hundred meters further to arrive at Shwe Ba Taung, the breathtaking “Petra of Myanmar”. The imposing, vividly colored temple facades found here were also carved by hand, creating a warren of narrow alleys and stunning devotional art amid the rocky cliffs.
