Daily Itinerary

THE MEKONG DELTA’S HIDDEN TREASURES

  • Daily Itinerary
  • Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City – Sadec – Cai Be

Welcome to your overnight Mekong Delta tour! Early in the morning you’ll depart from your hotel for the delta town of Sa Dec on a 3.5-hour drive.

Escaping much of the modernization that has influenced the rest of Vietnam, Sa Dec is a charming and authentic Mekong Delta town. The French writer Marguerite Duras spent 4 years here in the early 1920s. In 1984, her famous novel The Lover, set in Sa Dec, won the Prix Goncourt prize for literature. You’ll have lunch at the old home of the main character in Marguerite Duras’s novel after your stop at the beautiful Kien An Cung Pagoda.

Sit back and enjoy the tropical landscape of the Mekong Delta as you embark on a post-lunch cruise to Cai Be. Along the Mekong River, visit fish farms, flower gardens and floating houses. You’ll also have the opportunity to see a traditional hand-woven mat workshop. (Note: For an alternative option, after lunch drive in your own private car to Vinh Long where you will hop on board the cruise to Cai Be. Talk to your Travel Specialist to make sure you choose the option that suits you best.)

Explore one of the Mekong Delta’s largest brick factories in the town of Vinh Long, where bricks are skillfully made by hand.

Your onward cruise takes you across the Co Chien River where the Mekong River branches towards An Binh and the Binh Hoa Phuc Islands. You’ll continue to the Dong Phu Canal and on to Cai Be, the boat’s final destination. At a branch in the river overlooking the mighty Mekong is the spectacular Mekong Riverside Resort & Spa.

Enjoy the rest of the evening at your leisure.

  • Day 2: Cai Be – Ho Chi Minh City

On the second day of your overnight Mekong Delta tour, you’ll take a sunrise river cruise to a little floating market where produce is suspended on the boats’ poles to attract buyers. Many sellers have been living at this part of the river for generations.

Take a relaxed cycling trip a short stretch further along the Mekong to an area fairly untouched by tourism. You’ll peddle through tree-covered roads and over flowing canals, and pass luscious fruit gardens and quaint rural villages. Alternatively, you can catch a ride on a xe loi (bicycle with a trailer), which is unique to this region. Whichever option you choose you’ll be able to stop en route and see locals making turmeric spring-roll paper and watch water palm trees being made into roof thatching.

Visit a former veteran and his family who own a farm growing a large selection of tropical fruits. He’ll let you pick and sample some of the fruit and tell you stories from his life as a soldier.

Hop back in the saddle and peddle to our lunch spot, an impressive 100-year-old house built with a blend of Vietnamese and European architectural designs. Before you return to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) you’ll tuck into tasty local delicacies found only in the Mekong Delta region.
