MEANDER THE MOUNTAINS – BALI BY VW CONVERTIBLE

Drink in fresh air and coastal views on a short Bali driving tour. Explore roads less traveled on an open-air adventure.

TOUR INTRODUCTION

3 Days, 2 Nights     FROM US$ 433 PER PERSON

Meander off the beaten path in a rugged Volkswagen convertible jeep and explore Bali the way it’s meant to be explored: on an adventurous driving tour! Over three days, you’ll roam over iconic Balinese landscapes on roads that take you through jungle-choked mountains, lush rice paddies, a volcanic crater rim, coastal ridgelines and a prehistoric temple complex carved out of a cliff face. Enjoy all this in an open-air adventure with a private guide.

Your short Bali driving adventure begins with an excursion through verdant rice paddies to the prehistoric rock carvings of Yeh Pulu. You’ll continue to the remarkable pavilions carved into the slopes of Gunung Kawi, the “mountain of poetry.” Up next is a climb up the slopes of Bali’s most active volcano, Mount Batur. Looking over its aquamarine crater lake, you’ll enjoy lunch, then continue your journey to Besakih, the largest temple in Bali.

You’ll stay the night in Candidasa before jumping back into your jeep for your journey to the famed water temple of Tirta Gangga, then the village of the Bali Aga, Bali’s first inhabitants. Enjoy the sun on your face and the wind in your hair as you travel to Pantai Pasir Putih for a swim at one of Bali’s most picture-perfect beaches. Before you end your journey by jeep in Ubud, South Bali or Denpasar airport, you’ll visit Goa Lawah and Kertagosa, important relics of eras past.

Daily Itinerary

Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Yeh Pulu – Mount Batur - Candidasa

Your short Bali driving tour begins this morning when you’re picked up in a VW 181 convertible jeep. You’ll head for the hills in this ideal vehicle for cruising the mountain roads of Bali.

At your first stop, Yeh Pulu, take a short walk through lush rice paddies to view remarkable rock carvings that were made roughly a millennium ago. These unusual works of art depict pre-historic religious motifs as well as scenes of daily life.

Return to the VW and drive a further 30 minutes to the “mountain of poetry,” Gunung Kawi. This complex of shrines and pavilions were carved out of the hillside in the 11th century to honor the Raja Anak Wungsu, the ruler of Bali and Java, and his wives.

Continue on your scenic drive to the slopes of Gunung Batur, Bali’s most active volcano. From the edge of a 12-kilometer wide caldera, you’ll drink in incredible views of Mount Batur, which towers over the landscape at an altitude of 1,800 meters. The mountain also houses the largest lake on the island, a stunning turquoise-green caldera lake.

From the caldera, a steep road leads up to Mount Batur’s crater rim where you’ll sit down to a lunch with a view at Madu Sari Restaurant.

After lunch, you’ll continue your open-air drive through small villages and make several stops for photos. You’ll visit Besakih, the largest temple in Bali. Considered the most important temple of Bali, Besakih is commonly known as Bali’s “Mother Temple.” Built on the western slopes of Mount Agung—Bali’s highest volcano at 2,567 meters—Besakih Temple covers a vast area surrounded by mountain scenery.

When you arrive at your hotel in the afternoon, you’ll have the rest of the day free. (Total travel time for the day is about 3.5 hours not including lunch and stops.)

    Overnight in Candidasa

    Meals included: Lunch

  • Day 2: Candidasa – Tirta Gangga – Amed

Today after breakfast, set off for the second leg of your short Bali driving tour with a visit to majestic Tirta Gangga (approximately a 40-minute drive). This sacred water palace named “water of the Ganges” was built by the last king of Karangasem in the early twentieth century. The palace’s many ornate ponds and fountains are surrounded by lush gardens and natural bathing pools.

Following this visit, get some exercise on a gentle, 2-hour trek through verdant rice fields. Your route stretches from Kastala Village to Tenganan Village, home of the Bali Aga people, Bali’s first inhabitants who lived here before the arrival of the Majapahit Dynasty from Java. The village compound is arranged in a unique north–south axis that is very different from traditional Balinese villages. As you walk through the village, you’ll have chances to observe traditional basket weaving and people weaving ikat pattern textiles.

We’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Candidasa. Aftewards, a 20-minute drive will bring us to one of Bali’s most picturesque beaches, Pantai Pasir Putih—otherwise known as “White Beach.” Indulge in a refreshing swim or a fresh coconut juice before continuing through a landscape of terraced rice fields to arrive at the coastal village of Amed (about 1 hour). After today’s long journey, you’ll have the rest of the afternoon to spend at your leisure.

    Overnight in Amed

  • Day 3: Amed – Goa Lawah – Departure

This morning you’ll rise early to embark on a 2-hour trip in a traditional fishing boat. Drift along the stunning Amed coastline with views of Mount Agung in the morning light. Take the opportunity to snorkel among Bali’s spectacular marine life before heading back along the coast.

Return to your hotel and enjoy breakfast. Then we’ll check out and head to Taman Ujung, driving along the coastal road—a lovely, winding road less traveled—passing remote villages and rugged black beaches.

Visit Ujung Water Palace, which was built in 1919 as part of the Karangasem Kingdom. We’ll enjoy a late megibung lunch—a ceremonial Balinese feast—served in a bamboo restaurant. Drink in the views of rolling fields and rice terraces as you recharge.

Finally, continue along the coastal road for another 1.5 hours to reach Bali’s smallest regency, Klungkung. En route, we’ll stop at Goa Lawah (also known as Bat Cave), a sacred temple inhabited by thousands of bats. In Klungkung, we’ll visit Kertagosa, home of Bali’s 17th-century Royal Courts. These Balé-style relics house some of Bali’s most impressive artwork. You’ll discover ceilings painted with intricate, colorful Kamasan-style images that provide spiritual lessons. Peruse a small museum here that holds a collection of interesting artifacts.

The last leg of your short Bali driving tour will be the journey to your hotel in Ubud (roughly a 40-minute drive) or a Southern Bali beach (about 1.5 hours). We can also transfer you to Denpasar Airport for a return flight in the evening (fare not included).

    Meals included: Breakfast and lunch
