Daily Itinerary

Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Chiang Mai - Chiang Dao - Tha Ton - Mae Salong - Golden Triangle

After arriving in Chiang Mai you’ll be met by your private Backyard Travel guide who will pick you up and escort you to Tha Ton, making a stop (after approximately one hour’s drive) at Chiang Dao, a small provincial town in the Ping Valley, north of Chiang Mai.

The limestone caves at Chiang Dao are a 12-km long stretch of tunnels and caves set at the foot of Chiang Dao Mountain in the national park, a scenic region that showcases the beauty of Thailands north.

Once you’ve investigated the fascinating cave complex, you’ll then enjoy a local-style lunch at a nearby restaurant before resuming your journey to Tha Ton, located between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, a ride which will take approximately two hours.

Tha Ton rests on the banks of the Kok River, which you’ll cross to visit Mae Salong. Around the region of Tha Ton and Mae Salong you’ll have the opportunity to visit some hill tribe villages, in particular those of the Akha and Yao hill tibes. You’ll also have the chance to visit a village populated by descendents of the Kuomintang Chinese Nationalist army that fled China during the People’s Revolution.

After visiting the various hill tribe villages and learning about the diversity of Thailand’s north, you’ll then be chauffeured to Chiang Rai where you’ll stay for the next two nights.

    Overnight in Chiang Rai

Meals included on this day: Lunch

  • Day 2: Golden Triangle-Sop Ruak-Chiang Saen

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel you’ll set off on a day of exploration around the Golden Triangle region.

The Golden Triangle, known as Sop Ruak to locals, is an area where the Mekong and Ruak rivers join and the point where Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet. Firstly you’ll go to see the confluence of the rivers before going to view the Hall of Opium, an impressive museum which tells the story of the region and recounts the opium trade all the way back to the age of imperialism.

After learning all there is to know about opium, you’ll make a stop at a delightful local restaurant before continuing on to Chiang Saen where you’ll pay visit to Wat Chedi Luang. Construction on the striking temple started back in the 14th century but wasn’t finished until the mid 15th century during the reign of King Tilokaraj.

Next you’ll take a scenic boat cruise along the Mekong River, stopping at Don Sao Island which is technically a section of Laos, though no visa is required to visit. Here you can stroll around the many stalls selling authentic Laos trinkets and souveneirs, giving you the chance to enjoy a touch of Laos.

You’ll then return to your hotel in the late afternoon before spending the rest of your day at your own leisure.

Please note: The Hall of Opium is closed every Monday. If the second day of your tour falls on a Monday, your visit to the museum will take place on the morning of Day 3.

  • Day 3: Golden Triangle – Mae Sai – Tachileik

After breakfast your local guide will chauffeur you on a 30-minute journey to Mai Sai which borders Myanmar. Once there, you will be met by your Backyard Travel guide who will help you with all the formalities of crossing the border, enabling you a smooth and effortless transfer into Myanmar.

Before the 4.5-hour scenic transfer to Kengtung, your local Backyard Travel guide will take you to visit the nearby Tar-Lot market where you’ll interact with Myanmar’s friendly local street vendors for the first time.

Once you arrive in Kengtung (which literally translates as ‘Walled City of Trung’) your guide will escort you to your hotel to check-in. You’ll then be taken on a short trip around the town to discover the local neighborhood. If you’d like to dine in an authentic restaurant, your local expert guide will be happy to suggest an appropriate venue.

    Overnight in Kengtung

    Meals included: Breakfast

  • Day 4: Kengtung

Today you’ll have the exhilarating opportunity to embark upon a guided trek around the rolling hills found halfway between Kengtung and Mong La, so be sure to dress appropriately with good, strudy footwear. A two-hour scenic journey by road will deliver you to the grassy landscape, during which you’ll catch inspiring views of the surrounding mountains.

Your trail leads you across the hilly terrain (with slopes varying between 20 and 30 degrees) to a beautiful wooden monastery thought to be more than 300 years old. You’ll make a quick stop at the fascinating structure to investigate the carvings and paintings that depict Jakata stories.

You’ll then continue on the guided trek to Wan Nyat a small village inhabited by the Loi hill tribe. Here you’ll have the opportunity to take a break and soak up the traditional lifestyle and culture of the local villagers.

At this point your expert guide will give you the option to continue your trek another hour along an easier trail to Wang Seng, another local Loi village which is even lesser-seen and rarely visited by travelers. Once you arrive, again you can spend time absorbing the local color and the village’s impressive monastery, taking time to enjoy your delicious picnic lunch. If you’d rather not continue the trek, you can enjoy your lunch in Wan Nyat.

Whenever you’re ready you will return back down the trail to your vehicle before your Backyard Travel guide escorts you back to Kengtung. Once you’ve freshened up, your evening will be free to spend as you desire. If you’d like to try some local cuisine, once again be sure to consult your expert local guide who’ll be happy to share their secrets!

    Overnight in Kengtung

Meals included on this day: Breakfast and Lunch

  • Day 5: Kengtung

After your hotel breakfast you’ll make an exciting visit to one of Kengtung’s local markets. Markets are always a hub of activity in Southeast Asia and are a wonderful place to experience the buzz of local life and see reality without frills.

Many of the sellers at the market are villagers from surrounding hill tribes who bring their homemade or organically grown produce down to the market dressed in their traditional outfits to sell or trade. Fans of noodles may wish to have a minimal breakfast at the hotel and fill up at a charming Shan noodle stall at the market, where your guide will direct you to the most delicious shop around.

After you’re fully sated you’ll then embark upon a mini excursion around the nearby streets to visit Maha Myat Muni pagoda, not to be confused with the temple of the same name in Mandalay. You’ll also have the chance to visit Wat Ho Kong nearby, a temple where monks learn Buddhism in khun, a language similar to the lanna dialect in Thailand.

Your Backyard Travel guide will then escort you to the local airport for your flight to your next destination.
