THE JEWELS OF WEST JAVA

Travel to the “home of the gods,” where volcanoes and jungles reign. Discover fascinating nature and culture on this West Java tour.

9 Days, 8 Nights     FROM US$ 1248 PER PERSON

With horseback rides to hilltop Hindu temples, refreshing dips in jungle caves, and musical performances by Javanese locals, you’ll discover all the beauty and diversity of West Java on this gently active 9-day tour. From the splendid botanical gardens of Bogor to the smoldering volcanoes of the “home of the gods,” you’ll never forget your time in this wildly captivating land.

You’ll start your West Java tour amidst the cosmopolitan buzz of Jakarta and end your journey in Yogyakarta, long considered the cultural capital of Java. From Jakarta, you’ll be dazzled by the flora and fauna of Bogor’s lush botanical gardens, and you’ll visit Java’s famed coffee and tea plantations. You’ll be serenaded by village students playing traditional bamboo instruments and perhaps even have a go at playing them yourself.

A variety of Javanese cultures and customs will be revealed to you as you tour local villages, ancient temples and wild regions, from the thatched-roof homes of a Sundanese village to the smoking, volcanic landscape of Dieng Plateau, known colloquially as the “home of the gods.” Catch your breath on the lovely beaches of Pangandaran, then take a river cruise through Pangandaran National Park to meet the wild denizens of the jungle, including monkeys, flying squirrles and monitor lizards.

You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the oldest temples in Java before ending your tour in culturally rich Yogyakarta with some last-minute shopping and sightseeing.

“This tour takes you through wild and unique landscapes full of volcanoes and jungles. It’s perfect for nature lovers, culture hounds and people who like something a little different for their holidays.”

  • Day 2: Bogor-Bandung

Today after breakfast and check out, you’ll embark on a journey to Bandung with a leisurely stop at the splendid botanical gardens of Bogor on the way. The vast gardens house more than 15,000 species of plants and trees, including 5,000 orchid species.

Next, we’ll drive along the mountainous Puncak Pass, which offers views of plantations, local Javanese villages and lush rice fields on the way. Stop at the Gunung Mas tea plantation en route to learn how Java’s famous tea leaves are planted, harvested and processed by locals. Feel free to stop your driver whenever you see a vista you’d like to photograph.

After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll arrive in Bandung in the afternoon. Check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

    Overnight in Bandung

  • Day 3: Bandung-Tangkuban Perahu-Bandung

Today your West Java tour will give you a close encounter with an active volcano. After breakfast, we’ll head to the smoldering, 2,000-meter-wide volcano of Tangkuban Perahu and walk around Kawah Ratu, the main crater.

On the way back to Bandung, we’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant and pay a visit to the Saung Anklung Udjo workshop. This arts and crafts venue works to preserve the rich, traditional culture of Java. You’ll be treated to a performance by village students playing the angklung, a traditional bamboo instrument. • Day 4: Bandung-Garut

Today after breakfast, we’ll check out from the hotel and venture southeast on a roughly 3-hour drive to the town of Garut, the capital of Garut Regency.

En route, we’ll visit Kopi Aroma, a coffee factory where we can observe Java’s famous coffee beans being roasted and brewed by traditional methods. The equipment used in these processes date back to the 1930s. In addition, the origin story of this coffee roastery is a fascinating one!

Next we’ll stop at Cangkaung, the only Hindu temple in West Java. This hilltop temple built during the era of the first Sudanese kingdom can only be reached by several interesting modes of transport. First, take a horse-drawn cart, then float across a small lake on a bamboo raft, then climb through a picturesque grove to reach the temple. After exploring the temple, your expert guide will lead you on a 1-hour walking tour of the nearby rice paddies and villages.

Drive on to Garut and check in to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

  • Day 5: Garut-Pangandaran

Today your West Java tour will bring you to the southern coast of Java, to the enchanting coastal town of Pangandaran.

After breakfast at your hotel, check out and drive just half an hour to the traditional Sundanese village of Kampong Naga. The riverside village has no electricity and the inhabitants live in thatched, wooden houses in a way that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, continue roughly 4 hours to Pangandaran. The peninsular region here offers beautiful beaches with colorful fishing boats on one side and monkey-filled jungles on the other. Check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

    Overnight in Pangandaran

Meals included on this day: Breakfast and lunch

  • Day 6: Pangandaran

After breakfast today, spend the day exploring Pangandaran, one of the jewels of West Java.

Begin the day with a tour of a bustling fishing village and observe how locals use native herbs as forms of traditional medicine. You’ll also get the chance to see locals making brown sugar from the nectar of coconut blossoms. Your final stop this morning will be at a krupuk factory located in a local home. Krupuk, or crackers made from fish or shrimp, are a Javanese staple. Although the factory can be quite pungent, a visit offers fascinating insight into local industry and cuisine.

At midday, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

Continue with an excursion into the dense jungles of Pangandaran National Park. Board a wooden boat on a leisurely cruise through the Green River Canyon. You’re likely to spot a variety of wildlife such as deer, monkeys, flying squirrels and monitor lizards, as well as giant liana vines.

The river’s emerald waters flow through a stone canyon. About 15 to 30 minutes into the journey, the river will narrow and you can take a dip in a natural cave surrounded by waterfalls and stalactites. (Please note: Swimming is only possible during the dry season.)

    Overnight in Pangandaran

Meals included on this day: Breakfast and lunch

  • Day 7: Pangandaran-Wonosobo

On today’s leg of the tour, we’ll depart from West Java and drive to Central Java, arriving in Wonosobo in the mid-afternoon. The scenic drive will take roughly 5 hours with a stop for lunch along the way.

In Wonosobo, check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

    Overnight in Wonosobo

Meals included on this day: Breakfast and lunch

  • Day 8: Wonosobo-Dieng Plateau-Gedong Songo Temples-Jogjakarta

Leave early this morning for the drive to Dieng Pleateau, which rises 2,000 meters above sea level. Often called the “home of the gods,” the volcanic Dieng Plateau is characterized by a mesmerizing landscape of volcanic activity. Among sulphurous fumes and rugged surroundings, you’ll see the beautiful but poisonous lake inside Dieng Crater, as well as the 7th- and 8th-century Hindu shrines that line the crater floor.

We’ll head back to Wonosobo and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to Ambarawa. Here, you’ll tour the Hindu Gedong Songo temple complex, which was built in the 8th century and houses some of the oldest temples in Java. A short horseback ride to the top of the mountain will provide fantastic views of the area and a chance to wander among these ancient ruins.

Drive an additional 2 hours to Yogyakarta, long considered the heart of Javanese culture, and check in to your hotel.

    Overnight in Yogyakarta

Meals included on this day: Breakfast and lunch

  • Day 9: Yogyakarta – Departure

After breakfast, the final day of your West Java tour is free to indulge in last-minute shopping or to sightsee at your leisure until it’s time to transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
