A JAVANESE JOURNEY

Cycle through historic Yogyakarta, summit Mount Bromo, and gaze onto turquoise crater lakes on this week-long Java journey

TOUR INTRODUCTION

7 Days, 6 Nights     FROM US$ 998 PER PERSON

On this active 1-week Java tour, you’ll explore temples, summit volcanoes, and see stunning landscapes aboard a train, on horseback, via 4-wheel-drive jeeps, on a cycling tour and, of course, on foot. Hitting all the best historical sites and natural wonders of Java, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to mingle with locals and immerse yourself in Javanese life.

Start with a taste of local life with a horse cart tour of the little village of Candirejo, where you’ll journey through little lanes lined with traditional houses and gaze upon lush rice terraces. Then, as you wander through the stone walls of Borobodur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Buddhist temple on earth, a private guide will be on hand to answer all of your questions. A full-day city tour of Yogyakarta, the heart and soul of old Javanese culture, will familiarize you with the architectural gems of the Sultan’s Palace, the water gardens of Taman Sari and other sites that will titillate your curiosity.

After being whisked across dramatic landscapes by train to East Java, you’ll stay at the foot of Mount Bromo, Java’s most famous active volcano. There, you’ll have the chance to watch the sunrise and ride on horseback to the crater rim. Hands-on visits to plantations growing cocoa, coffee and spices will reveal local agricultural customs and traditions, and a 4-wheel-drive excursion to the stratovolcano Mount Ijen will bring you face to face with a turquoise crater lake. Breathe the ocean air and transfer by ferry to Bali at the end of your trip before your onward journey.

“Java has so much to offer, from its stunning natural scenery to its rich Sultanate history and majestic ruins. If you enjoy easy treks, temple explorations, and sunrises over volcanoes, this tour is for you.”

Welcome to Java, where you’ll spend 1 week touring one of Indonesia’s most dynamic islands! Your guide will meet you at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta and transfer you to your hotel in Borobudur by private car (a 1.5-hour drive).

From Borobudur, you’ll journey to the little village of Candirejo for a taste of local Javanese life. Enjoy lunch at the village before hopping on a local dokar horse cart to take a leisurely tour through the village, traveling along narrow lanes lined by traditional houses. You’ll witness plenty of village activities, such as crop harvesting, gamelan playing, and cassava-cracker production.

Transfer back to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

Meals included on this day: Lunch

  • Day 2: Borobudur – Sambisari – Yogyakarta

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel today before departing with your private guide and driver for Borobudur Temple. You’ll explore this intriguing UNESCO-listed temple—the largest Buddhist temple in the world—on a guided tour, learning about the history behind its impressive construction. Built of thousands of volcanic stones and river rocks, the structure was built entirely by human labor, taking more than 75 years to complete.

Return to your hotel for check-out and continue to Kaliurang Village where you’ll tuck in to a sumptuous lunch at the Beukenhof Restaurant on the slope of Mount Merapi.

After lunch, head next door to the Ullen Sentalu Museum. Owned by the royal Haryono family, the museum is renowned for its extensive collection of Javanese art and cultural relics.

From Kailurang Village, set off on a mostly downhill bicycle ride with Mount Merapi as the stunning backdrop. You’ll pass through local villages and have opportunities to stop for photos or chat with villagers. Your guide will also show you the area’s rice, snakeskin fruit, and tobacco plantations, explaining the agricultural processes of these regional crops.

Your cycling tour through local Javanese landscapes will end at the 9th-century Hindu temple of Sambisari, which was at one time buried 5 meters under the ground.

From Sambisari, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Yogyakarta (about a 30-minute drive). Check in to your hotel and enjoy the rest of your day at your leisure.

  • Day 3: Yogyakarta city tour – Prambanan

After breakfast, you’ll embark on a full-day guided tour of Yogyakarta, Java’s most historic city.

You’ll start with the palace of the sultan, known as the Kraton. This majestic building was constructed between 1756 and 1790 and is a wonderful example of Javanese sultanate architecture and aesthetics. The Sultan still lives here today, and the compound is a living museum showcasing an impressive array of Javanese culture, including performances of golek menak puppets and classical Javanese poetry known as macapat.

Next, you’ll continue by local becak to the Taman Sari Water Palace. This remarkable complex of bathing pools was added to the original royal palace 200 years ago by the first Javanese sultan for his harem.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the 9th-century Hindu temples at Prambanan. The inner shrines of this UNESCO World Heritage Site are dedicated to the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Return to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

  • Day 4: Yogyakarta–Jombang–Tosari or Ngadisari

This morning, you’ll rise early at 5:30, check out, and transfer at 6 a.m. to Yogyakarta Railway Station for your scenic, 3.5-hour train ride to East Java. Your guide will accompany you, and your hotel will provide a boxed breakfast that you can eat on the train. Traveling by train in Java is a great way to meet local people and provides optimal views of the dramatic, volcanic landscapes of Central and East Java.

(Please note: Your planned route is aboard the Sancaka Pagi departing from Yogyakarta at 6:45 a.m. and arriving at Jombang at 10:33 a.m. Train schedules are subject to change without notice. Your passport details are required to book the train ticket and must be provided at the time of reservation. Please bring your main luggage with clear name identification to hotel reception before 8 p.m. on the previous night. Your luggage will be brought by a driver to Jombang Railway Station. We advise bringing a day bag with a change of clothes, toiletries and a light jacket as the air conditioning on the train can be quite chilly.)

Upon arrival at Jombang Station, your private driver will meet you to continue your journey to Tosari or Ngadisiri—you choice—which are gateways to Mount Bromo. En route, you’ll visit Trowulan, the seat of the Majapahit Empire, which ruled the Indonesian island chain from the 13th to 16th centuries. Here you’ll see the ancient temples of Candi Tikus and Candi Bajang Ratu, and visit the fascinating archaeological museum.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and proceed on a 4-hour drive—passing the picturesque coastal town of Pasuruan and traveling via a beautiful mountain road—to reach Mount Bromo.

Check-in to your Tosari or Ngadisiri hotel on the outskirts of Bromo-Tengger-Sumeru National Park. Dinner will be served at your hotel.

    Overnight in Tosari or Ngadisari

Meals included on this day: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Day 5: Mt. Bromo – Kalibaru

Today includes one of the highlights of your 1-week Java tour: a sunrise trek up Mount Bromo. A 4-wheel-drive jeep will take you up steep terrain to a viewing spot with commanding views of the active volcano and its surreal surroundings. From here, witness the spectacle of the sun slowly rising from behind Mount Bromo.

Afterwards we’ll drive through the lunar-like landscape of the volcano’s caldera. A 20-minute ride on horseback will bring you to a set of stairs that leads to the crater rim. Soak in the magnificent view from the summit of the volcano before returning by horse and jeep to your hotel for breakfast.

(Please note: Wear warm clothes for the sunrise ascent. Weekend visits to Mount Bromo are subject to a USD$10 surcharge.)

After checking out of your hotel, it’s an all-day drive to remote Kalibaru via Probolinggo and Jember, but you’ll be rewarded with stunning scenery along the way. We’ll also stop for lunch in Jember and you’re welcome to make stops for photos en route.

Arrive in Kalibaru in the late afternoon and check-in to your hotel. Tonight, dinner will be served at the hotel restaurant.

Meals included on this day: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Day 6: Kalibaru - Ijen

After a leisurely breakfast, take a relaxing 90-minute tour of the lush plantation gardens of Margo Utomo Agro Resort. You’ll learn about the harvesting and production processes of cocoa, coffee, coconut and spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. End the tour with a coffee tasting session before heading back to the hotel for lunch.

In the afternoon, check out of your hotel and head to the town of Banyuwangi at the foot of the Ijen volcano complex. You can choose to stay at a hotel in nearby Licin or Ketapang.

    Enjoy dinner at your hotel.

  • Day 7: Mt. Ijen – Departure

The last day of your 1-week Java tour starts with an early morning exploration of Mount Ijen, home to a complex of active stratovolcanoes. After breakfast, a 90-minute drive via a 4-wheel-drive jeep will bring you to Paltuding base camp at 1,850 meters. From here, it’s a 3-kilometer ascent to the summit. At the top (at 2,385 meters), you’ll marvel at the volcanic landscape of a turquoise crater lake and active sulfur mines. You may see barefoot miners carrying loads of up to 70 kilograms down the side of the mountain. The crater lake contains about 36 million cubic meters of acidic, steaming water.

(Please note: We’re allowed only to view the lake from the crater rim. Approaching the lake shore is strictly forbidden due to toxic fumes. This trek requires good physical condition, sturdy walking shoes and warm clothing. As an active volcano, Mount Ijen’s accessibility is subject to volcanic activity. If the volcano is closed during your stay, we can arrange alternate activities, such as a visit to the Kaliklatak coffee and rubber plantations. Weekend treks to Mount Ijen are subject to a US$5 surcharge.)

Head back to base camp and return to Banyuwangi for lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, board a local ferry in Ketapang for a scenic journey across the Bali Strait to reach Gilimanuk Harbor in West Bali.

Upon reaching Bali, continue by road to your hotel in Pemuteran or Lovina Beach (accommodation not included) to continue your onward journey.
