  • Day 1: Yogyakarta

Upon arrival your guide will meet you and transfer you to your hotel by private car.

Yogyakarta or ‘Jogja’ as it is sometimes written; is the centre of old Javanese culture, and is the most popular spot for visitors to the island.

Enjoy lunch and take some time to freshen up at your hotel. In the afternoon you’ll get to see the process of batik at a batik workshop. After seeing how it’s done, you can make your own design from scratch, and it will be delivered to your hotel after it has dried.

Built in the 18th century, its grand chambers and rooms are excellent examples of Javanese sultanate architecture. Next door is the water palace and garden of ‘Taman Sari’, built by the first Sultan, with lots of bathing pools for his harem.

You will then be met by a ‘becak’, a local form of transport which will take you through the streets of the city to see real city life; including markets where songbirds are sold. Afterwards, enjoy lunch in a local restaurantThis afternoon we drive out west of the city to the magnificent Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site took more than 75 years to construct; and its thousands of carvings and unique structure are truly impressive. Panon temple is famous for its perfect symmetry and you will also visit the pyramid temple of Mendut, which pre-dates Borobudur.

See the village life of Candirejo next as your ride in a local horse cart or ‘dokar’, down the lanes of this quiet village. Stop to see everyday village activities; vanilla and chilli harvesting, making cassava crackers and playing local instruments.

After your dokar ride, return to Yogyakarta, where the rest of your evening is at leisure.

  • Day 3: Yogyakarta-Prambanan-Sukuh & Cetoh Temples-Solo

Head out to the 9th century Hindu Temples at Prambanan next, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inner shrines here are dedicated to the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Continue to the charming city of Solo; Yogyakarta’s ‘twin sister’, known formerly as Surakarta.

See the fine collection of classical Javanese art at the 18th century Mangkunegaraan Palace; including 14th century jewelry, silverworks and traditional Javanese weapons. Enjoy lunch at Pecel Solo, a charming traditional Javanese restaurant which often plays live gamelan music.

Continue east, ascending a scenic mountain road to Sukuh temple. This temple was built in the 15th century and is surrounded by fantastic scenery.
