  • Day 2: Bangkok

Life in Bangkok starts early! We’ll get into the local spirit with a morning trip to the famous temple Wat Pho. Here you’ll see monks begin their morning chanting ritual—a serene and often moving experience. You’ll explore the temple grounds and discover the 45-meter reclining Buddha. Next door is Thailand’s most famous landmark, the Grand Palace, which is the heart of old Bangkok and home of the Emerald Buddha. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha was built by King Rama I, the founder of Bangkok, as a monument to his reign. Behind the opulent buildings and courtyards lies a fascinating history, revealed by our knowledgeable guide.

Take lunch overlooking the Chao Phraya River at the charming Supatra River House, a restaurant owned and run by one of Thailand’s most famous performance artists. In the afternoon we’ll embark on a walking tour of Chinatown, one of the oldest parts of Bangkok. A swirl of activity and interest, Yaowarat Road has restaurants and shops displaying all sorts of Chinese goods from traditional herbs and desserts to spirits and antiques. Just around the corner we’ll take tea with the locals at an old, traditional teashop. A short walk down a small soi, Leng Moi Eia, brings us to Talad Kao, a delightful market with a great selection of fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, and traditional Chinese medicines. Finally, we’ll visit the grand Taoist temple Wat Leng Neng Yee. In the evening you’ll have time to indulge in a massage, explore the city by tuk-tuk, or dabble in the famous Bangkok nightlife.

Then we’ll stroll to the temple’s gleaming, golden tower and survey the panorama of Rattanokosin Island as its bells announce a new day in Bangkok. We’ll drive through this historic part of town, stopping to pick up gifts for the monks of Wat Rathabophit, a beautiful temple with a European-influenced interior. Here, you’ll offer food and flowers in the Buddhist tradition of tak badh. This ritual originated around the time of the Lord Buddha and is said to decrease selfishness. It’s an authentic experience that provides a glimpse into how Thais practice Buddhism.

For a delectable lunch, head to the Thompson Bar & Restaurant, named after the former American “King of Silk,” who disappeared mysteriously in the jungles of Malaysia in 1969. Some local families continue to produce silk here and the Jim Thompson Museum next door displays a range of top-quality silk goods. The afternoon is free to relax and pamper yourself at the hotel.
