Journey through picturesque plains to ancient villages, and visit some of the capital’s most important landmarks and temples.

Your Hanoi cultural tour is full of surprises. Absorb the fascinating history of the Temple of Literature, where students studied Confucius for centuries. Then revel in the story of Vietnam’s famous revolutionary, Ho Chi Minh, at his revered mausoleum, where the nation’s deep respect for “Uncle Ho” is still tangible.

On an excursion out of the cosmopolitan city, you’ll travel through picturesque countryside dotted with mountains to an ancient agricultural village. At Duong Lam, you’ll get unique glimpses at centuries-old architecture and temples that abound in sculptures and artwork. Back in the capital, take the opportunity to join local hosts at their home for an authentic Vietnamese meal. You’ll also try your hand at puppet painting and watch a traditional water puppet show at an artisan studio. But of course, you can’t leave Hanoi without joining the locals and learning Tai Chi from a master. Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Hanoi Arrival

Step off the plane at Noi Bai International Airport ready for your Hanoi cultural tour! You’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Be enthralled by the city’s vibrant hustle and bustle among tree-lined boulevards, colonial villas and tranquil lakes on the 1-hour journey into town.
After check-in, visit the Temple of Literature, which offers a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s culture. Established in 1076, it is the site of Vietnam’s first university and a rare example of well-preserved traditional architecture. Students at the university studied the principles of Confucianism, literature and poetry for over 700 years! Open Tuesday through Sunday (excluding public holidays).
Soak up the historical impact of the father of modern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh. First, marvel at the majestic marble edifice of the mausoleum, where his revered body lies embalmed. Continue to his former home in the late 1950s and 1960s—a modest wooden house on stilts, set in a well-kept garden with a fishpond.
Stop off at the One Pillar Pagoda, a beautiful 11th-century wooden structure built to resemble a lotus blossom floating on the water.
An optional site for today is the Vietnam Women’s Museum, which showcases Vietnam’s vast cultural diversity and the significant role of women in society, both historically and in modern day. If time permits—or if you choose this as an alternative stop on your itinerary—we’ll explore this highly acclaimed museum.
Enjoy traditional cuisine for dinner in the center of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Our host learned her culinary skills from her grandmother, who cooked for the French elite in the 1930s.

Rise early for breakfast and set off on your cultural tour into the captivating countryside of northern Vietnam. Travel 1.5 hours through Hanoi and the picturesque plains of the Red River Delta to Duong Lam Village. This ancient agricultural village has preserved its quaint 100-year-old houses. • Day 3: Hanoi

Ready for a day of cultural exploration? After breakfast, head to a local Hanoi suburb off the beaten track and spend the day immersed in Vietnamese culture. Begin at a small local market with vendors offering fresh seafood, fruit, vegetables and traditional snacks. Continue wandering through the small streets, and discover the daily life of Hanoi’s residents. Take a refreshing coffee break beside a peaceful lake before making your way through the hidden lanes past a pagoda to a historic temple.

For lunch, we’ll be invited into a typical Hanoian home and enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal. Exchange stories of your home country with your friendly hosts. Afterwards, we’ll say goodbye and set off through the narrow streets to a beautiful lake and a hidden local market.

A cultural tour of Hanoi isn’t complete without a water puppet performance! After the market, you’ll take a short drive to the house of a well-known puppeteer for a workshop and 30-minute performance that tells stories of Vietnam’s ancient and modern traditions.
