Vietnam’s capital is filled with interesting culture and this tour will allow you to experience first-hand many of its delights. From centuries old comic opera and tai-chi to traditional medicine and galleries representing generations of artists, from pre-20th century right up to the present-day.

In the evening, see one of two one of two traditional performances. Tuong, a comic opera; or Ca Tru, an ancient genre of chamber music using female singers. Enjoy dinner at the home of a cook whose Grandmother used to cook for the French elite in the 1930’s.

Take a Tai Chi class in Hanoi Botanical Gardens and drive to one of the few remaining ancient villages in Vietnam. See the magnificent demons and dragons carved into the roof of Tay Phuong Pagoda and the next day visit an expert in traditional eastern medicine. Go on an insider’s tour of the flourishing Hanoi art world and discover quirky galleries and hang-outs, as well as some of the city’s most interesting museums.

  • Day 1: Hanoi

    Upon arrival our guide will meet you and transfer you to your hotel (taking approximately 1 hour) by private car.

    If there’s time you can visit the city’s Ethnology Museum which doubles as a research centre and displays exhibits detailing the variety of ethnic groups in Vietnam.

    This evening you’ll see one of two traditional entertainment performances:Tuong - A comic opera combining elements of song, dance and theatre. Or:-Ca Tru - An ancient genre of chamber music using female singers, with its origins in North VietnamDinner will be at the house of a cook whose Grandmother used to cook for the French elite in the 1930’s.

  • Day 2: Vietnamese Dine

    This morning we go to Hanoi Botanical Gardens for a Tai Chi session. The focus will be on breathing and concentration and is suitable for all levels. Head back to the hotel for breakfast before your trip to the agricultural village of Duong Lam in the Northern River Delta; one of the few remaining ancient villages in Vietnam.(taking approximately 1.5 hours).

    Discover the area’s 1200 year old history, immersing yourself in the local culture; seeing 400 year old houses and meeting locals as you wander through narrow village alleyways and past tiny temples. We’ll visit the hamlet of Mong Phu, whose original village entrance is the only one in the country to remain intact. Continue through the alleys to see the old houses of the village made from laterite. We’ll enjoy a local Vietnamese lunch in one of these 100 year old homesteads.

    After lunch we continue to Mia Pagoda to learn about its array of 287 different statues, including the Buddha and the ‘Eight Vajra Deities’. Next are two temples dedicated to the national heroes Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen. After seeing these monuments we go to Tay Phuong Pagoda, which offers unique sculptures, beautiful architecture and magnificent demons and dragons which have been carved into the wooden roof. From here we head back to Hanoi.

    Dinner this evening is at a restaurant housed in a restored villa.

  • Day 3: Hanoi Craft Villages

    For centuries the families in the villages surrounding Hanoi have specialized in the making of single commodities; passing their knowledge down and perfecting it through generations. We’ll take you to the best of these villages where you’ll see the craftspeople employing all their skill and knowledge in the making of objects such as bird cages, conical hats and wooden buildings(taking approximately 45 minutes).Take lunch in Hanoi, and in the afternoon visit an expert of Traditional Eastern medicine. Dr Huong has practiced all over the world for 20 years and has studied a range of methods, from acupuncture and acupressure to catgut implantation. Follow this visit to discover the huge assortment of medical herbs, spices and compounds in ‘traditional medicine street’. Your evening is free at leisure.

  • Day 4: Hanoi Art Scene

    This insider’s tour takes you into the flourishing Hanoi art world. Our expert guide will show you quirky hangouts and galleries far from the tourist trail, as well as some of the city’s most interesting museums.

    You’ll have lunch at the house of the Director of the National Committee on Disability in Vietnam, whose cozy living space is filled with antiques and interesting artifacts.

  • Day 5: Departure

    Your day is at leisure until your transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
