Continue with a journey through Japan’s cultural heartland, soaking in the natural beauty of the seaside town of Kamakura and exploring the stunning forested peaks and bubbling hot springs of Hakone. Daily Itinerary

  • Daily Itinerary
  • Day 1: Tokyo

Welcome to your Japan luxury tour! You’ll be met at the airport by your private chauffeur and transferred to the Conrad Tokyo, a five-star hotel overlooking the Hamarikyu Gardens and Tokyo Bay. Spend some time relaxing and refreshing after your trip. The rest of the day will be free to spend at your leisure.

Dinner tonight will be a pan-Asian treat: quintessential Japanese ingredients will be reinterpreted and cooked by the award-winning chefs at the Conrad’s three restaurants. Enjoy modern French dining at the Michelin-rated Collage followed by Cantonese cuisine at the Michelin-rated China Blue, then end with a grand finale of kaiseki dining at Kazahana. Your meal will include wine pairings with delectable sake and Japanese wine.

  • Day 2: Tokyo

Today after breakfast, you’ll be treated to a full-day guided tour of Tokyo. You’ll embark on your luxury sightseeing trip at the hotel, where your guide and private driver will pick you up.

Wander through the shops and warrens of Asakusa in Tokyo’s atmospheric shitamachi, or “old town.” Asakusa is Tokyo’s oldest geisha district, and this historic part of town is also home to Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, Sensoji.

On a route that takes you past famous Tokyo landmarks such as the Ginza district, the Imperial Palace, and the Shinjuku “scramble” crossing, you’ll make your way to Meiji Jingu, Tokyo’s most famous shrine. This imposing shrine surrounded by a beautiful park is dedicated to the late Emperor Meiji (1852–1912) and his wife. Here, you’ll get the chance to witness a Shinto purification ritual and receive a blessing from a Shinto priest.

Your itinerary today is flexible, so please let us know if you would like to see something in particular, and we’ll be sure to arrange it.

  • Day 3: Tokyo - Kamakura - Hakone and Mt. Fuji

This morning, your luxury Japan tour leaves the frenetic pace of Tokyo behind for the quiet seaside. A private 1.5-hour drive will bring you to Kamakura, a charming coastal town that was once the capital of Japan. You’ll spend the day sightseeing, viewing ancient temples as well as the Daibutsu, the second-largest bronze Buddha statue in Japan.

Continue on to the stunning natural beauty of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Tonight, you’ll stay at the Hakone Ginyu ryokan, a refined Japanese inn with splendid views of the surrounding mountains. Each room offers tatami-mat floors and soft futon with a private outdoor terrace and onsen (hot spring bath).

In the evening, indulge in kaiseki in your room, a gorgeously presented meal consisting of many small courses made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Relax in your yukata (cotton robe) and enjoy a moonlit soak in your onsen.

  • Day 4: Hakone

You’ll tour the national park today with your guide and private car. On clear days, the park offers superb views of Mt. Fuji—however, please keep in mind that this iconic mountain is notoriously shy and can only be seen when the weather is fine.

First up on your exclusive full-day tour is the opportunity to ride the famous ropeway to Mt. Owakudani, the source of Hakone’s hot springs. Here, try one of Hakone’s local delicacies: the kuro-tamago, a hard-boiled egg cooked in the sulfuric hot springs. According to local lore, eating one of these eggs will add seven years to your life! (Please note: Mt. Owakudani may be temporarily closed due to volcanic activities. If so, our local Travel Specialist will arrange another activity for you.)

Next, take the ropeway up to Togendai where you’ll set sail on a magnificent replica pirate ship across Ashinoko, a caldera lake in Mt. Hakone that was formed more than 3,000 years ago in a volcanic eruption.

After your lake cruise, you’ll visit the outdoor sculptures of the Hakone Open Air Museum. Located in a park with beautiful views of the surrounding valley and mountains, the museum also features indoor galleries that include a significant Pablo Picasso Collection displaying some of the legendary artist’s paintings, sculptures, prints and ceramic works.

Enjoy another sumptuous meal back at the ryokan.

  • Day 5: Hakone - Kyoto

Today you’ll travel in style and luxury to Kyoto via the world-famous shinkansen, or bullet train. Kick back, relax, and enjoy the 2-hour ride in the spacious First Class Green Car. (Please note: Before checking out, a pre-arranged luggage service will transfer your luggage from Hakone to Kyoto. Please leave your luggage at the front desk at or before 08:00 today. Your luggage will arrive at your Kyoto hotel in the evening.)

After checking in to your hotel, you’ll have some time to relax and freshen up before you’ll be taken by private car for an exploration of Kyoto, the cultural capital of Japan. Your first stop will be Heian Shrine, which houses Japan’s largest torii gate. Take a leisurely stroll around the shrine’s four renowned gardens, collectively called the Shin-en. You may recognize the inner garden, or Naka Shin-en, from the movie Lost in Translation.

Next you’ll continue on to the stunning Kiyomizu-dera, a beautiful, iconic temple situated on Mt. Otowa. Offering magnificent views of Kyoto, the wooden veranda of the temple is famous for being built entirely without the use of nails. (Please note: Parts of Kiyomizu-dera are undergoing renovations.)

  • Day 6: Kyoto and Nara

After breakfast at your hotel, enjoy a full-day, guided, private tour of Kyoto and Nara. Traveling by private car, you’ll visit Nijo Castle, famous for its Momoyama architecture, decorated sliding doors and “chirping” nightingale floors. Located amidst stunning gardens, this castle was built in 1603 by the shogun as his Kyoto residence.

Next, visit the Golden Pavilion, or Kinkakuji, which was originally constructed as a retirement villa for the shogun. At his request, it was converted into a Buddhist temple after his death. Today, the remarkable gold-gilded temple is one of Kyoto’s most famous structures.

A pleasant one-hour drive will bring you to Nara, a historic town that served as the capital of Japan for just 74 years in the 8th century. Today, this ancient city still retains many of its temples and shrines, many of which are clustered around the beautiful grounds of Nara Park. We recommend visiting Todaiji Temple, the world’s largest wooden building and home of the largest Buddha statue in Japan. You might also opt to see Kasuga Taisha, Nara’s most celebrated shrine.

Nara Park, commonly called “Deer Park,” is filled with tame deer. You’ll certainly spy many of these graceful animals as you stroll through the park. Your private driver will transfer you back to Kyoto in the afternoon.

  • Day 7: Kyoto

After a satisfying breakfast, enjoy the morning and afternoon at your leisure. We would be happy to arrange a private car with an English-speaking chauffeur to continue a luxury tour of Kyoto if you prefer. (Please book this in advance; additional fees will apply.)

For the last night of your luxury tour of Japan, we have a special treat planned for you. In the afternoon, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the Gion District—Kyoto’s famous geisha quarter. Guided by a local with historical expertise, you’ll embark on a short walking tour of Kyoto’s most atmospheric district, exploring the narrow lanes and traditional shops of Gion. You’ll pass by famous landmarks such as the Yasaka Shrine and Minami-za Theater.

In the evening, you’ll sit down to a sumptuous multi-course Japanese dinner hosted by a maiko, an apprentice geisha, in lovely traditional kimono. Take this opportunity to chat with her and learn about her craft. Feel free to ask questions about the world of the geisha—interactions like this only come once in a lifetime! While you dine, the maiko will perform traditional dances, and don’t be surprised if she invites you to play a few Japanese drinking games.
