Daily Itinerary

Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Beijing - Great Wall

Your mobile accommodation, complete with driver and expert Backyard Travel guide, will collect you from a pre-arranged point in Beijing and you’ll then pay a visit to a local supermarket to stock up with supplies* for your evening barbecue (weather permitting) and tomorrow’s breakfast.

The campervan you’ll travel in can accommodate a family of five, with sleeping space for two adults and three children. Inside the mobile home you’ll find a shower unit and toilet as well as a fridge, small dining table and electric hobs to cook on, should the weather not facilitate a barbecue.

Your first stop after leaving Beijing will be at the village of Guandi. Located in the Huairou District, Guandi is part of the ‘Green Great Wall’ project which started in 1978 and aims to prevent desertification in the North of China and reduce sandstorms in Beijing.

You’ll learn all about the fascinating project - which is due to complete in 2050 - as you chat with a local official over a cup of tea before he takes you to see the results of the project thus far.

Next you’ll move on to the Jiankou section of the magnificent Great Wall, just 90 minutes from Guandi. This area of the wall is much less busy than other sections, but also less polished. Some of the walkways may offer a challenge, but the slightly rough state of repair offers an old-world feeling of a wall that’s stood in various guises for centuries. Sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended as you move around the scenic ruins.

Construction of The Great Wall of China is said to have begun over 2,000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty and was originally planned to protect the Chinese from invading barbarian forces from the north. Today the Wall stands as one of the world’s most iconic structures.

Your walk to Tiandi (‘The Ladder to Paradise’) will take approximately 30-40 minutes and is well worth the effort, offering sublime panoramic views from high over the surrounding plains. You’ll then return to your mobile home to enjoy your barbecue while your local Backyard Travel guide and driver retire to a nearby guesthouse.*Portions of meat, vegetables, bread, butter, jam and coffee will be provided but other drinks and food are purchasable at your own discretion.

  • Day 2: Great Wall - Beijing

We recommend for you to rise early this morning, and take a sunrise breakfast before setting out to the famous Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China.

During your walk you’ll pass various watchtowers, mostly placed high on the crest of hills for the best viewpoints. The towers were strategically spaced out to offer the best range of vision for guards to spot invading barbarians. If they spotted a horde approaching, they would light fires to signal they were under attack.

As lunch time approaches you should reach The Schoolhouse just as your stomach begins to rumble. The restaurant is an abandoned primary school - hence the name - which has been turned into a top local dining destination.

The Schoolhouse also offers a glass-blowing workshop and accommodation options with a socially responsible philosophy to provide support and employment in the local community and utilize local resources.

After lunch you’ll make the two-three hour drive back to Beijing to return your campervan and continue on your journey to your next destination.

If you’d like to combine this short overnight excursion with one of our other customizable China tours, please let our locally based Travel Specialist know and they will plan your itinerary to suit your needs.
