Daily Itinerary

  • Daily Itinerary
  • Day 1: Beijing arrival

Welcome to the first day of your tailored Beijing city break! You will be met by your guide and taken to your hotel.

Depending on when you arrive, your first outing will be to the Temple of Heaven. This temple has a simple design and reflects early Buddhist and Taoist beliefs.

    Overnight in Beijing

No meals included on this day

  • Day 2: Beijing

Today your Beijing city break takes you to the Forbidden City, which was completed in 1420 and boasts 9,999 rooms. The majority of Chinese buildings face south, as the north symbolized barbarian threat or invasion according to ancient beliefs. As an example, the entrance to the Forbidden City faces south to Tiananmen Square.

Due to the site being so huge, the Forbidden City is often divided into three parts:
    1. Official palaces: Used for ceremonies, imperial exams and governmental meetings
    2. Imperial lodgings: Including gardens, where the emperor, empress and visiting ambassadors resided
    3. Surrounding areas: Including temples, libraries and additional gardens

Note: Please remember to bring your passport for security check upon arrival.

Take your time exploring this unforgettable site, enjoying the opportunity to sit and soak in the atmosphere of the serene courtyards and rooms. For a bird’s eye view of the Forbidden City, climb the coal hill. From here, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views over Beijing city.

For the remainder of the day you’ll stroll around Beihai Lake and the lively Houhai Lake, which surround Beijing’s well-loved hutongs. These narrow and lively hutongs (alleyways) are full of traditional-style courtyard homes.

Continue on foot to Drum Tower where you can see a demonstration of how the passing of each hour was marked with a drum roll during the Ming Dynasty. The view from the top of the tower reveals the rooftops of the neighborhood hutongs.

Optional evening activity: Attend a traditional performance of “The Legend of Kung Fu” at the famed Red Theater.

    Overnight in Beijing

    Meals included: Breakfast

  • Day 3: Beijing

On day three of your Beijing city break you’ll head to the famous Great Wall! You’ll depart your hotel early in the morning so you can take photos with the warmth of the morning light. Travel back in time to the Qin Dynasty to find the first defensive walls from 2,000 years ago, which were later unified and linked under the Ming Dynasty to create the Great Wall as we know it today. The Wall now spans over 6,000 kilometers from ancient Manchuria to Jiayuguan at the edge of the Gobi Desert.

If you do not wish to walk up to the Wall you can also take the cable car. On the way down there is also the option for children to enjoy an exhilarating toboggan ride to the bottom.

Time permitting you will be able to have a picnic on the Great Wall while you enjoy the rugged surrounding landscape.

On your return to Beijing, visit the Summer Palace, a collection of temple pavilions, lakes, pagodas and gardens. You’ll be able to enjoy some time strolling through the key features including the Long Corridor, Marble Boat, Seventeen-Arch Bridge, Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill. The Summer Palace is a stunning representation of Chinese culture and architecture. The Imperial Court would relocate to the Summer Palace when the heat was too much in the Forbidden City.

Once you have finished exploring you will be transferred back to your hotel.

On the final day of your Beijing city break you’ll explore the capital’s art scene at 798 Art District. 798 comprises a number of abandoned factories and has become one of the most vibrant art scenes in Asia. Many famous artists including Ai Weiwei had their first exhibitions at 798. You’ll have time to explore the Dashanzi area’s many cafes, restaurants and boutique shops, which also showcase young designers’ works of art.

If you want to check out the upcoming exhibitions in advance, you can look on the 798 website:

After a lovely day of discovery, we’ll transfer you to the airport for your onward travel arrangements.
