Daily Itinerary

Daily Itinerary

  • Start
  • Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau Valley

Your local Backyard Travel guide and driver will meet you after breakfast to take you on a four-hour drive to the beautiful Hoa Binh Province which lies to the southeast of Vietnam’s capital.

The drive will take you through some of Northern Vietnam’s most picturesque scenery, including past dramatic limestone karsts and several small villages which the White Thai, Muong and Dao hill tribes call home.

Just as you approach Mai Chau, you’ll weave your way down through a 14km stretch of striking mountain scenery and lush green fields and rice paddies - classic Vietnamese countryside.

On arrival at one of the region’s small villages of the White Thai hill tribe (which you will call home for the night), you’ll be served up a gastronomic treat for lunch in the form of authentic food.

You’ll begin your walking once lunch is over and you’ve had the chance to relax and appreciate your surroundings. As a gentle way to ease into the trekking days to follow, you’ll take a leisurely 1-2 hour walk around your homestay village and the surrounding valley.

Depending on which day you arrive, you may also have the chance to enjoy a visit to Mai Chau Market or Van Village.

In the evening you’ll enjoy another home-cooked meal at your homestay, prepared by your host family, before relaxing in the village to experience an evening of tranquility surrounded by the sounds of nature and a million stars shining brightly overhead.

  • Day 2: Mai Chau - Hang Village

You’ll start your day with a hearty breakfast in preparation for an active day. Once full, your local Backyard Travel guide will take you on a 22-km drive out to the Pu Luong Nature Reserve where you’ll begin your day’s trek to Hang Village.

We suggest a sturdy pair of walking shoes for your scenic three-hour walking tour through the idyllic scenery of the surrounding countryside guided by your expert local Backyard Travel guide. Along the way you’ll enjoy a scenic picnic lunch at a picturesque spot.

Hang Village is also a White Thai hill tribe village, and you’ll spend your night at another traditional homestay with a local family in a stilted house. An authentic home-cooked dinner will be served up by your host family.

  • Day 3: Hang Village - Kho Muong Village

We suggest an early rise this morning to make the most of your time in the village - where life begins every day before the crack of dawn. Perhaps you’d like to join in with some of the daily chores to learn how life takes shape in the local community, or simply wander the village and observe the everyday rituals take place.

After breakfast you’ll begin a harder six-hour day of trekking, with half of your route moving along village paths and half the journey following an old unpaved French trail. Along the way you’ll experience steep ascents and several stream crossings as you venture out through the picturesque Vietnamese countryside passing smiling local villagers on your way.

Halfway through your trek you’ll take a break for lunch and seek refuge from the sun and mid-afternoon heat. Your local Backyard Travel guide will lead you to a local hill tribe village where you’ll enjoy an authentic local lunch in one of the family homes.

Rested and sated, you’ll pick up where you left off after lunch and make your way along the old road to the lovely Kho Muong, a remote hill tribe village nestled between two imposing mountains

Upon arrival, and if you have energy to spare, you’ll be able to take a two-hour hike to a newly discovered cave, which remained concealed from explorers for years by thick vegetation. The cave was quickly listed as a protected attraction by local rangers due to the delicate ecosystem and bat colonies that reside within.

Dinner will once again be home-cooked by your host family, with whom you can share the evening and exchange culture, or simply retire early after a hard day of exercise to soothe your aches.

  • Day 4: Kho Muong - Pho Doan - Hanoi

Once woken by the sounds of everyday village life, you’ll have the chance to enjoy another traditional breakfast in the village with your host family before you set out to for Pho Doan and the Ma River.

The two-hour trek will be more relaxed than you’ve experienced on the previous day, as you stroll through an open valley down to Pho Doan Village. If you’re lucky enough to arrive on a Sunday you may like to take in the fascinating village market where locals from around the region gather to buy, sell and trade their homegrown and homemade goods.

After lunch at a local village restaurant you’ll trek on to the beautiful Ma River, which runs for over 400km through Vietnam and Laos then back through Vietnam to the Gulf of Tonkin.

You’ll be able to take a moment to soak up the serenity of the area as you reflect upon an adventurous, rewarding exploration of an often unseen area, before being picked up by private vehicle and transferred with a three-hour drive back to Hanoi, arriving in the late afternoon. Please note: Appropriate footwear must be worn during the trek.
