Maeve Nolan
General Manager
Based in Bangkok, Thailand

My Role as Backyard Travel General Manager:
I’ve made Asia my home for the past 17-years and during this time I've been lucky enough to carve a career in travel which has allowed me to integrate my life passion into my work….as a result Backyard Travel was conceived to enable travelers to experience Asia from an insiders perspective, and leave them with memories etched on their minds.

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
Travelling to the Northern part of Vietnam 15-years ago by motorbike and visiting the hill tribe markets of Ha Giang definitively felt ‘frontier’ at the time. Another wonderful travel memory I have was 6-years ago taking a sunrise balloon trip over the temples of Bagan Myanmar which was simply ‘wow’.

Why I Travel:
When I was 9, I travelled to Asia for the first time to Java. Coming from wintery Northern Scotland the heat, noise and humidity were intense, and as a child, it seemed like an entirely different world! Exotic smells, the eclectic street life and noise all left me with a sense of awe and fascination and I have not stopped wanting more ever since!

My Dream Trip:
Travelling to the Tibetan region of Sichuan China to visit nomadic families who spend the summer at higher pastures below Himalayan peaks. I’d also love to visit remote Raja Ampat in Indonesia on a traditional Phinisi boat.

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
Southeast and Northern Asia has been home for much of my travelling experiences over the last 10 years. The mix of culture, landscape and culinary delights continues to impress me and my desire to create memories. In light of this I would have to say that visiting the beautiful city of Hoi An in Vietnam and immersing myself in the local food and culture has always been a lasting memory. Along with this is the feeling of achievement I had as a young traveler when I stepped on the Great Wall of China for the first time to marvel at such an impressive structure.

Why I Travel:
Growing up as a child I had a map of the world on my desk that I would stare at for hours and wonder what life was like for people in those cities and countries.  I believe in finding your passion in life and following it, we live in an amazing world and my passion for travel has sent me across it. The life education and experiences travel has provided me will always be etched in my memories and last a lifetime. Travelling isn’t something I do, it is who I am.

My Dream Trip:
On my list of experiences to have in life is to travel to Selo in Indonesia next to Yogyakarta and climb Mt Merapi. Provided it is not erupting the pure intensity and exhilaration of walking on such an active Volcano I think would remain a moment I would remember forever.

Why I travel:
I seem to feel ‘peace-of-mind’ when I explore different cultures. When I need inspiration, or am at a crossroads in my life, travel seems to give me ideas, as well as renewing my passion for the everyday.

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
When I climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan I saw the moon and sun rise simultaneously. I was above the clouds and looking down onto the plains of Japan, and the world below. The view took my breath away and this experience is one that I will cherish for the rest of my life!

Don’t be surprised if you see that Onsen resorts have vending machines selling milk. In Japan, drinking milk is a pastime associated with bathing. Since people need to rehydrate after a hot soak, milk is considered the choice for this purpose. So, when you travel around Japan, don’t forget to follow this Japanese tradition and try drinking a cool bottle of milk after enjoying the baths. Why I travel:
Travel is about experiencing new things. When I was around five or six years old I went to Northern Thailand, which is home to colorful hill tribes. I remember being intrigued by the beauty of their culture and it was so magnificent, that from that moment, I knew I loved to travel. And later on in life I realized the best way to discover yourself is from the things you’ve seen and experienced.

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
A few years ago, I was traveling with my friends to Siem Reap Cambodia. What is most amazing to me about Angkor Wat is that its ruins are so spread out. It’s a truly magical, spiritual, and ancient place and has to be seen at least once.

My Dream Trip:
I wish to soak in an Onsen in front of amazing scenery whilst hiking or skiing in Hokkaido.
