Maeve Nolan
General Manager
Based in Bangkok, Thailand

My Role as Backyard Travel General Manager:
I’ve made Asia my home for the past 17-years and during this time I've been lucky enough to carve a career in travel which has allowed me to integrate my life passion into my work….as a result Backyard Travel was conceived to enable travelers to experience Asia from an insiders perspective, and leave them with memories etched on their minds.

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
Travelling to the Northern part of Vietnam 15-years ago by motorbike and visiting the hill tribe markets of Ha Giang definitively felt ‘frontier’ at the time. Another wonderful travel memory I have was 6-years ago taking a sunrise balloon trip over the temples of Bagan Myanmar which was simply ‘wow’.

Why I Travel:
When I was 9, I travelled to Asia for the first time to Java. Coming from wintery Northern Scotland the heat, noise and humidity were intense, and as a child, it seemed like an entirely different world! Exotic smells, the eclectic street life and noise all left me with a sense of awe and fascination and I have not stopped wanting more ever since!

My Dream Trip:
Travelling to the Tibetan region of Sichuan China to visit nomadic families who spend the summer at higher pastures below Himalayan peaks. I’d also love to visit remote Raja Ampat in Indonesia on a traditional Phinisi boat.

Every day I discover something new, and at this rate, I’ll have to stay in Asia for many years to see it all!

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
I love getting off the beaten path, and experiencing the Mekong River in Northern Cambodia to see river dolphins was definitely one of my most life altering experiences! I love the delicate balance that Asia is in right now, between cities bursting at the seems to the pristine untouched wilderness areas.

Why I travel:
I realized my passion for travel as a child. My father was a miner and his job took us to remote parts of Thailand. The area I will always remember is Mae Hong Son where we stayed on a mountain deep in the forest along a river. One time, I saw deer come down from the hillside to the river. It was this picture that I never forget in my life and this inspires me to travel for these memorable and unexpected moments.

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
My family and I traveled overland from Bangkok to Luang Prabang. It was a long distance with a thousand curves along the way. Then, high in the mountains we found a local coffee shop with incredible scenery.

My Dream Trip:
The Elephant Round Festival at Surin province is my dream trip.  Hundreds of these beautiful animals can be seen at the festival and it will be like traveling back in time to see how these majestic beasts and their mahouts once lived.

My Insider Tip for Thailand:

Travelling is my nature. I love to be on the move, seeing this beautiful world, crossing different cultures, meeting people and communicating in different ways. For me, travelling means appreciating every moment of my life!

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
Reaching to the top of Mount Fansipan; as well as exploring Hang En (Swallow) cave in Phong Nha. Both made me realize how small people are in comparison to nature!

My Dream Trip:
Rafting on Telaga Waja River and cycling along the track route through charming villages on an exhilarating downhill ride from Mount Batur in Bali.

My Insider Tip for Vietnam:
Trekking in Pu Luong Nature Reserve is a great combination with a Halong Bay cruise as it shows you the best of Vietnam's bizarre limestone karst world.

Why I travel:
The world is so large. I love seeing people with different cultures in the world. Through travelling, I challenge my beliefs, overcome my fears and open my mind.

My Most Amazing Travel Experience:
While travelling in the mountains of Ha Giang in the far  North of Vietnam, I was excited seeing the spectacular landscapes and experienced the daily life of the local hill tribes. At that moment, I wanted to shout: I love you Vietnam!

My Dream Trip:
A cycling trip from the coast of Vietnam, through the central highlands into the heart of Cambodia.

My Insider Tip for Vietnam:
Take a day biking tour in Hoi An. When riding the small narrow countryside roads, you get to see water buffalos, rice and organic vegetable fields and local farming villages. It is really the best way to feel the Vietnamese way of life.
