While Tokyo has no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants, sometimes you just want something a little more… fun. Fresh sushi and a hot bowl of ramen are must-tries when visiting the Japanese capital, but for some a whacky Japanese dining experience – and there are plenty to be had – why not check out the below?
Alcatraz E.R: If you’re hungry for some horror, this “medical prison” restaurant promising macabre entertainment as you are treated by crazy costumed “nurses” and fed on entrails and various other human body parts (crafted from sausages). Hand-cuffs, fake blood and oversized needles are part of the fun.
Ninja Akasaka: Select your meal from a scroll and summon ninjas to your table in this themed restaurant. Upon entering this dark maze-like cave, prepare to be wowed by various ninja tricks while you enjoy your sushi or your bonsai ice cream – or go for a birthday for a special treat.
Alice in Wonderland: Go down the rabbit hole into this cute themed restaurant with Italian and French amuse bouche and cocktails. Tea-cup booths, playing card tables and a cascading heart chandelier bring Lewis Carroll’s book to life – keep your eyes open for the Cheshire Cat and dare to eat the cake with the ‘Eat Me’ label!
Cure Maid Café – Japan’s original “maid café” you can come here for iced tea and cakes served by waitresses in Victorian maid outfit, in a soothing comfortable environment. Treat yourself if you’ve been out exploring the streets of Tokyo all day and are in need of a break.
Cat café – Neko Jalala: Sometimes you really need a kitty cuddle, especially if you’re missing your furry friend back at home. No problem in Tokyo – just head to a café like this one, read the kitty bios, order a coffee or ginger tea and enjoy some quality playtime. Neko Jalala is in Akihabara – Electric Town – close to the train station, and the purrfect way to wind down a busy shopping day.
